Kentucky Derby Contenders: Do Your Reading | Maboot.com

The Kentucky Derby definitely has something in common with the NCAA basketball tournament or the NFL Super Bowl?it?s an opportunity for recreational players to get involved and bet on the event. Let?s face it, it takes a long time to learn how to bet on sports?or bet on horses?successfully. The most difficult thing about handicapping sports or horses is the high volume of information that needs to be assimilated on a daily basis. Big events like the Kentucky Derby make it possible to focus on a single event instead of having in endure the day in/day out grind of handicapping multiple tracks and races.

This being said, it?s important for even the novice recreational sports bettor to do their research on the Kentucky Derby contenders. And the best place to do this is the Daily Racing Form which is often abbreviated ?DRF? for short or simply called ?the form?. The heart of the racing form is past performance information on every horse involved in the race (which are often referred to in their abbreviated form as ?PPs?). If you?re at the track you should immediately buy a copy of the Daily Racing Form and the track racing program. If you?re at a sports book in Las Vegas they?ll also have copies of the Daily Racing Form and if you?re betting online you can get the information from the DRF website.

The Daily Racing Form (or DRF for short) is the Wall Street Journal of the horse handicapping set. The track program will offer much of the same information about the specific track, but is frequently in a more ?user friendly? format than the often arcane DRF. The basic stats you?ll find in these publications are the names of the horses, jockeys and trainers, the morning line odds, and the types of bets available for each race. You?ll also have past performance charts, which are the bread and butter of serious horse handicappers. These charts reveal a lot about a horse and what they?ve done on the racetrack, including it?s record, where it ran, the quality of competition it ran against, and what position the horse was in at various points in the race. Most tracks have customer service types that are helpful in clearing up anything you don?t understand. While asking the personnel in a sports book ?who they like? isn?t a wise idea, it?s OK at the track due to the nature of parimutual wagering?you?re not betting against ?the house?, you?re betting against other players.
