Samsung Galaxy S III Arrives at C Spire

Wireless carrier C Spire has made available for purchase on its network a new highly appealing smartphone, namely the Galaxy S III.

The handset lands on shelves at this operator in time for the company?s 4G LTE rollout, and should prove a worthy rival to Apple?s iPhone 5, which has just been launched at the carrier too.

In fact, C Spire already announced a few weeks back that it would launch Samsung?s high-end smartphone, when it unveiled its 4G LTE rollout plans, along with the release of Motorola PHOTON 4G on its network.

Galaxy S III is now listed on C Spire?s website with a price tag of $199.99 attached to it with the signing of a two-year contract agreement on a data plan.

The smartphone is available in Marble White and Pebble Blue and packs 16GB of internal memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 64GB of additional storage space.

Packing a large touchscreen and a fast and powerful application processor inside, the handset is said to be the best Android-based smartphone of the year.

?See more of your world with the Samsung Galaxy S III and its 4.8-inch SUPER AMOLED touch screen,? the wireless carrier notes.

?Do more with its 1.5 GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor. Share more with excellent front and rear cameras. The Galaxy S III is the next big thing.?

The mobile phone comes to the market with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, capable of recording video in full HD resolution, complemented by a front camera for making video calls.

It also sports Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11 a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz), Bluetooth v4.0, GPS turn-by-turn navigation featuring Google Maps, support for CDMA 850/1900 MHz connectivity, and a 2100 mAh Li-Ion battery that can deliver extended usage times.

Those of you who are interested in the purchase of Galaxy S III at C Spire should head over to the wireless carrier?s website to learn more on the available offer.

Mayor "Not Pleased" About Reduction in CPS' Bond Rating

Rahm Emanuel speaks at an appearance at Tarkington School of Excellence on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Friday that he was "not pleased"?with a decision by Moody's Investor Service to again drop the Board of Education's bond rating but said his actions were a matter of priorities.

?Kids are getting an additional hour and 15 minutes today and I had to take care of that first,"?the mayor said Friday. "I could not put the fiscal challenges ahead of our educational challenges."

The bond-rating agency's action comes after a more than week-long Chicago Teachers' Union strike.

On Thursday, Moody's reduced CPS' debt to A2, reflecting "a weakened financial profile."?The company said it thinks "the district will be hard-pressed to make the budget adjustments necessary" to close an approximate $1 billion budget gap for fiscal 2014. The rating applies to $6.4 billion in debt.

Chicago Public Schools said in a statement that it is making "tough decisions" to fix finances without sacrificing children's educations. CPS said it has cut more than $500 million over the past year.

"In the last 16 months, we?ve taken 16 percent of cost out of the system. We have more work to do. Yes, we had two [bond rating drops]. But, I want to repeat: this contract is cheaper and more frugal by 40 percent while our kids educational time has increased by 30 percent,"?said Emanuel.

In July, Moody's separately downgraded Chicago Public Schools' bond rating outlook from stable to negative.

Teachers and CPS officials agreed on a contract earlier this month.

Tempur-Pedic buying Sealy for about $228.6M

(AP) ? Mattress company Tempur-Pedic is buying rival Sealy for about $228.6 million in cash.

Tempur-Pedic International Inc. said Thursday that it will pay $2.20 per Sealy share, which is a 3 percent premium to the company's Wednesday closing price of $2.14.

Sealy, based in Trinity, N.C., currently has about 103.9 million outstanding shares, according to FactSet. Its stock jumped 21 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $2.35 in premarket trading.

Tempur-Pedic says it will also assume or pay back all of Sealy Corp.'s outstanding debt. The Lexington, Ky., company plans to finance the acquisition with debt. Its shares gained $1.32, or 4.9 percent, to $28.10 before the market open.

The companies put the total value of the deal at $1.3 billion, including debt. They say that the transaction will create a $2.7 billion global bedding provider.

"Tempur-Pedic and Sealy together will have products for almost every consumer preference and price point, distribution through all key channels, in-house expertise on most key bedding technologies, and a world-class research and development team," Tempur-Pedic CEO Mark Sarvary said in a statement.

Tempur-Pedic and Sealy will run independently of each other, with Sealy's CEO Larry Rogers remaining in that position. Rogers will report to Sarvary.

Tempur-Pedic, founded in 1992, makes and distributes mattresses and pillows in more than 80 countries under its Tempur and Tempur-Pedic brands. Sealy, founded in 1881, makes mattresses under brands including Stearns & Foster, Sealy and Sealy Posturepedic.

While Tempur-Pedic has a particularly strong presence in North America, Europe and Asia, Sealy has a strong presence in North America, Asia and Argentina. Sealy also has strong brand recognition through its international licensees and joint ventures.

Stockholders with about 51 percent of Sealy's outstanding shares have put forth a written consent approving the deal. No additional shareholder approvals are needed to complete the acquisition.

Both companies' boards have approved the buyout, which is expected to close during 2013's first half.

Annual cost savings for the combined company are expected to be more than $40 million by the third year.

The STD That Leads to Prostate Cancer | Health Fitness 4 Men

Here?s a terrifying thought: Right now, you could have an STD in your system that?s raising your risk for prostate cancer, and you don?t even know it.

The culprit? Trichomoniasis, an extremely common STD?caused by the parasite trichomonas vaginalis. It often goes unnoticed in the body due its lack of symptoms.?Previous research has found a correlation between having the STD and developing prostate cancer, and now new data in the journal PLoS Pathogens suggests a tangible explanation behind the connection.

Caucasian mid-adult male waiting on table in retro doctor office

Moral of the story: Get tested.

Here?s what you need to know about this nasty STD. (Have more urgent sex questions you need answered? Ask the Sex M.D.)

Are there symptoms?

Sometimes. You might experience itching or irritation inside your penis, discharge from your urethra, or a burning sensation after you pee or ejaculate. But out of the 3.7 million Americans who currently have the STD, only about 30 percent develop any symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Should I be concerned?

If you get the STD, it?s not going to go away unless you seek treatment. And consider this: Aside from that prostate cancer risk, trichomoniasis also causes genital inflammation, making it easier for you to get infected with the HIV virus, says John Alderete, Ph.D., lead study author and professor at Washington State University?s School of Molecular Biosciences.

Is it treatable?

Thankfully, yes. Since trichomoniasis is undetectable via blood test, your doctor will have to swab your urethra and take a culture sample to look for it, says Alderete. (Even if you don?t show any symptoms, request to get tested during your next checkup.) If you have the STD, your doc will put you on a prescription antibiotic. (To see the other common diseases you need to screen for?and where they usually lurk?check out America?s Most STD-Infested States.)

So where does my prostate come into play?

For a while now, epidemiologists have been looking for some type of bug that leads to prostate cancer. They tested all the usual suspects?chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, HPV, herpes?and none correlated, Alderete says. But once they examined trichomoniasis, they found a link: Infected men have a 40 percent greater chance of developing prostate cancer, according to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention.

And just how can an STD put me at risk for cancer?

Alderete and his colleagues hypothesize that trichomoniasis could contribute to prostate cancer via inflammation, or that it causes a chain reaction that leads to the creation of prostate cancer. Here?s how it works: ?In the body, there are these proteins called cytokines, and they are part of your immune system,? says Alderete. As soon as the STD gets into your system and lands on your cells, the parasite tells the cells it needs to respond. Your body switches into defense mode, bringing in other immune cells and creating new proteins. This interaction ignites a landslide of events?one protein turns on another. Eventually the protein HMGA1 becomes active, which in past research has been over-expressed in prostate cancers. That?s why researchers make the link, Alderete says. (Prevent against man?s biggest killer these 8 Ways to Cancer-Proof Your Body.)

APNewsBreak: Ex-Dodger owners back in family court

By ANDREW DALTON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:44 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The ex-wife of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has filed a motion to set aside the couple's divorce settlement, claiming he committed fraud by vastly understating the team's value.

Jamie McCourt's attorney, Bertram Fields, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she "thought very long and very hard about whether to file this motion" but after other means failed she was forced to return to court over the value of the team that sold for $2 billion in May.

"Mr. McCourt got about 93 percent of the family assets, and Mrs. McCourt got about 7 percent," Fields said in a phone interview. "We would've much preferred to have this massive imbalance resolved with some modification, but we got no response to that approach. We didn't want to have more family litigation, but now it's up to the court."

The motion filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court claims Frank McCourt misrepresented the couple's Dodgers assets as worth less than $300 million during their protracted divorce.

The pair's marriage was dissolved in October 2010, and Jamie McCourt received $131 million. The new court papers claim that after the sale and subtraction of relevant debts, Frank McCourt's assets turned out to be worth $1.7 billion, well over 10 times the amount Jamie McCourt received.

The motion says that even if Frank McCourt's figures were the result of mistakes rather than fraud, the settlement should be tossed out on the basis of the errors.

An email message seeking comment was sent to Ryan Kirkpatrick, an attorney for Frank McCourt, late Tuesday.

The Dodgers went into bankruptcy protection in June 2011, but Frank McCourt eventually sold the team in May of this year to a group that includes former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson for $2 billion, the highest figure ever paid for a pro sports franchise.

The group has vowed to restore dignity to the storied franchise after the era of McCourt, who is widely reviled by Dodgers fans for his seemingly profligate lifestyle at the club's expense after he bought the team from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. for $430 million in 2004.

In bankruptcy filings, attorneys for Major League Baseball said Frank McCourt looted more than $180 million in revenue from the club for personal use and other business unrelated to the team.

Divorce documents laid out the couple's expensive tastes, including the purchase of several homes, trips on chartered jets, country club memberships and even a six-figure, on-call hair stylist.

A hearing on the motion to set aside the divorce settlement has been scheduled for Nov. 16.

UPDATE: Amber Alert ends after Garland toddler found with baby ...

Patricia Garcia and Maliyah (via Garland police)

Patricia Garcia and Maliyah (via Garland police)

== 7 a.m., by Matt Peterson ==

Two-year-old Maliyah Vergenz is safe with her family in Garland and her baby sitter is in jail on suspicion of kidnapping.

Authorities found the two at the Villager Inn motel on Highway 80 in Terrell. The little girl was unharmed.

Police say the suspect, Patricia Garcia, has been distraught since losing a baby of her own to miscarriage.

== 3:30 a.m. ==

More importantly, the alert?s been canceled. WFAA is reporting Terrell police found the girl in good condition at a motel. Apparently they tracked a car matching the description in the Amber Alert.

My question is which vehicle description: the ?Chrysler Aspire,? the ?1998 Chrysler Aspen,? or the Chrysler Cirrus?

== 3 a.m. ==

Lots of confusion over the vehicle. Police now say it?s a Chrysler Cirrus. Not an Aspen. Not an Aspire.

== 10:10 p.m. ==

Some more on the vehicle: It?s a beige Chrysler Aspen with severe front-end damage. An initial release misidentified it as an Aspire.

Maliyah was last seen wearing a pink shirt and blue shorts.

WFAA-TV just interviewed police, who told the station that Garcia recently lost her own child. ?Mental strain.?

== 9:50 p.m. ==

Police say Garcia was babysitting Maliyah in the 4900 block of Palo Alto Drive this afternoon when she took off with the child.

Spokesman Joe Harn said he didn?t know of any criminal or violent behavior in Garcia?s past, but ?she has recently been under some mental strain,? which prompted the Amber Alert.

Harn tells me police were in contact with Garcia after the abduction and believed she would bring the child back. Since then, she hasn?t been picking up her phone.

It?s not clear where Garcia lives, and police have no idea which direction she might have gone. They?ve already checked several locations across North Texas to no avail.

== 9:30 p.m.==

Garland police have issued an Amber Alert for an abducted toddler believed to be ?in grave or immediate danger.?

Police say Maliyah Vergenz, 2, was taken by Patricia Garcia (aka Patricia Beruman, Particia Chavez or Patricia Cruces), 38.

Garcia weighs 250 pounds, has brown curly hair, brown eyes and a ?chubby face,? according to the alert. She is believed to be driving a beige 1998 Chrysler Aspire Aspen with paper plates, and was last seen in Garland.

Call the Garland Police Department if you can help find this girl: 214-354-8692 or 972-485-4878

(AP) ? The top of the AP Pro32 power rankings is a tough spot to hold.

The Houston Texans became the fourth team in as many weeks to sit first overall in the rankings. Fresh off an impressive victory at Denver to go 3-0 for the first time, Houston replaced San Francisco as the No. 1 team in voting Tuesday by 12 media members who regularly cover the NFL. Houston earned nine first-place votes and 380 points.

"Decisive win in Denver and big-time performance from Matt Schaub, losing part of his ear in the process," 2002 NFL MVP Rich Gannon of CBS Sports and Sirius XM radio said.

Schaub lost a small portion of his left ear lobe when his helmet cut it on a hard hit.

"I don't think we'll be hearing any more questions about Matt Schaub's toughness after the quarterback played with a severed ear lobe ..." added Alex Marvez of Foxsports.com

San Francisco dropped to a tie for fourth with the New York Giants. Previously, Green Bay and New England also held the top spot, then lost.

The other unbeaten teams, Atlanta and Arizona, were second and sixth, respectively. The Falcons got two first-place votes and 371 points, while the Cardinals had one and 335 points.

"The Falcons are hot, in all three phases," noted former All-Pro safety John Lynch of Fox Sports. "Is anyone playing the QB position better than Matt Ryan? I don't think so."

Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune gave the Cardinals the nod.

"It's hard to believe they are the best in football, but they have beaten more good teams and answered more challenges than any other team," Pompei said.

Rounding out the top 10 were third-place Baltimore, seventh-ranked Green Bay, No. 8 New England, No. 9 Seattle and No. 10 Chicago.

Last for the second straight week was Cleveland, which lost at home to Buffalo and is 0-3.

"Hope they're not expecting Ray Lewis to hold a pity party for them Thursday night," quipped Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.

Of course, the Browns have a bit of an excuse, as Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News pointed out:

"The Browns have the youngest starting lineup in the NFL at an average age of 24.86 years," he said.

The league's other winless team, New Orleans, fell to 27th. The Saints were ranked ninth in the preseason, but have lost twice at home after sweeping their home games last year.

"Now we know the value of a head coach and a quality defense," said Pat Kirwan of CBSSports.com and Sirius XM. "This is starting to look like a lost season at 0-3."

Not to everyone. Bob Glauber of Newsday had the Saints 22nd.

"Season's slipping away already," Glauber said. "Not what Drew Brees had in mind as his response to Bountygate fiasco. Still enough talent to get back into it, but time might be running out."

Gov. Brown gives green light to driverless cars in California

MOUNTAIN VIEW (Reuters) - California took the fast lane to the future on Tuesday when Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that lets self-driving cars onto public roads.

Brown rode to the signing ceremony at Google Inc headquarters in the passenger seat of a vehicle that steered itself, a Prius modified by Google. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and State Sen. Alex Padilla, who sponsored the bill, were along for the ride. An engineer for the technology company, Chris Urmson, sat in the driver's seat, but the car drove itself.

"We're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality," Brown said just before signing the bill.

Google has been working on self-driving technology since 2010, including testing a fleet of self-driving cars along California roadways.

Google's driverless cars rely on video cameras, radar sensors, lasers and a database of information collected from manually driven cars to help navigation, according to the company.

The new law goes into effect next year and establishes safety and performance regulations for testing driverless cars, provided an operator is ready to take control if necessary.

However, it will likely take years before a fully self-driving autonomous vehicle hits the road, industry official say.

"I think the self driving car can really dramatically improve the quality of life," said Brin, who pointed to uses ranging from aiding the blind, ferrying revelers who drank too much, to simply making better use of commuting time.

He added that by driving closer together more safely than human-driven cars, self-driven cars might cut congestion.

But Google has no plans to build its own driverless cars.

"We have had great conversations with a variety of automakers," he said. "Anything we do is going to be in partnership with the industry."

The technology has been in the works since the 1950s, when General Motors showed off "dream cars" with features such as autopilot. Recently, carmakers have started incorporating into today's models some elements based on the innovations in those early vehicles, including adaptive cruise control or traffic-jam technologies that can slow the car automatically.

Carmakers developing autonomous technologies include BMW AG, Ford Motor Co General Motors Co, Honda Motor Co Ltd, Hyundai Motor Co, Mercedes, Nissan Motor Co Ltd Toyota Motor Corp Volkswagen AG and Volvo AB, as well as suppliers, technology companies and universities.

Chip company Intel Corp created a $100 million fund in February to invest in future auto technology.

Nevada and Florida have already passed laws allowing self-driving cars.

In Boston, strong community means resilience in the face of change ...

September 22 is now Independent Game Development Day in Massachusetts, by proclamation of the governor. This year, the day also played host to the first Boston Festival of Indie Games, a free all-day event welcoming and celebrating the local gaming community.

There was a schedule of films like Darkon and Indie Game the Movie, and a pair of keynotes: One from computer historian Jason Scott, creator of Get Lamp (also shown at the festival) -- and one from me, where I talked about new ways of looking at the culture of experimental design.

I was excited to be invited to talk at the first Boston FIG, because I've gotten very interested lately in the ways different cities have such strongly-identified developer communities thanks to the kinds of schools, businesses and even social opportunities that create their infrastructure.

For example, in New York where I'm from, we've almost no lasting AAA studios. There's the sort of city-living entrepreneurial culture that encourages biz dev professionals exploring social games and work in advertising, but the diverse and focused programs at NYU, Parsons and their ilk also breed a fiercely creative culture that unites with other arts around incredibly social public events (just last week I spoke to New York's Ramiro Corbetta about Hokra and group spaces).

Boston also has the lack of a single publisher-led "anchor studio" combined with a strong academic community that tends to lead indie culture to flourish, but with many of the nation's top unversities concentrated in New England, I get the impression that Boston's indies are even more focused on problem-solving and experimentation within the research institution than other communities I've visited.

My friend Darius Kazemi is director of community at Boston web tech company Bocoup, and has been a Bostonian since 2005, when he worked on D&D Online and Lord of the Rings Online at Turbine, before running his own company doing game metrics middleware for some years. It's worth noting that I rarely meet anyone, anywhere in the games industry who has never met Darius.

"[Boston is] not like a Vancouver, or an Austin or even a San Francisco where there's usually a big publisher that trains people up and feeds the ecosystem," he tells me, when I ask what Boston's dev culture is like.

"We've managed to do very well, partly because of the really strong education that we have here. I think that's one of the reasons we can be resilient: We don't have a big studio that, if it closed, the entire ecosystem would tank."

But New England was rocked this year by an incredibly visible failure: The expensive collapse of 38 Studios. From what Kazemi can tell, the hiring economy has been relatively kind to the former 38ers -- those who uprooted their families and are now stuck with relocation costs are the ones suffering most. But many were able to return to open positions at Turbine or find work in other cities, he suggests.

"It didn't completely tank our ecosystem here," he adds. There are a wealth of smaller and midsize studios in the area, and a wide range of independent mobile and social teams. By comparison, the game industry in a city like vancouver thrives on its bigger companies and struggles much more when there are closures.

Boston's community is also extremely diverse, not apparently built around any specific industry hub, versus the West Coast, land of the AAA studios, or the Austin community, where teams are often online-focused. As a result community events and organizations proliferate, many of them themed around constructive programs for professional learning rather than simply social events (though there's that element, too).

One downside, though, is that developers with specific disciplines are somewhat limited. Let's say you want to work on online games, and you lose or leave your job at Turbine: You'd have to leave Boston. If you want to make high-end AAA games without working at Irrational? You'd have to move. That kind of brain drain is happening less and less, in Kazemi's view, but it's still an issue.

Another event relatively significant to the local community is the transition underway at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab, a six-year collaboration between the Media Development Authority and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that has produced over a hundred research papers and some 55 games, all aimed at discovering innovative design solutions in a collaboration between students and teachers who often also did research.

The partnership is ending, although MIT will continue to support a game lab team. GAMBIT's Clara Fernandez Vara, post-doctoral researcher, was at Boston FIG to showcase some of the GAMBIT team's last round of games, including The Last Symphony, a fascinating project she led that aims to bring meaningful narrative into the hidden-object genre.

She'll continue her research work at MIT. Many within the exciting community around GAMBIT have long had a special focus on storytelling and adventure-style games, another quality I've come to associate strongly with the Boston community (this time last year, I spoke to GAMBIT's Todd Harper and Abe Stein about innovative A Closed World, now an IndieCade selection) -- and Fernandez-Vara also specializes in storytelling.

Specifically, she's interested in a practical approach to blending design and storytelling, and ultimately MIT's transition from GAMBIT to the new MIT Game Lab will offer her more opportunity to focus on research and design rather than tech, to which her research is frequently applied. Lately she's been increasingly focused on strategies for encouraging the players to make and interpret their own stories, with an emphasis on environmental storytelling (she'll be speaking at GDC Online's Game Narrative Summit on this very idea).

"I think the new game lab is going to try to keep its ties with the community a lot," says Fernandez Vara, who herself is involved with Boston FIG and will continue to help with maintaining those bonds.

"The worst thing we've lost is the space at GAMBIT, but I know they're trying to find a new place we can have that physical space."

But like many of her colleagues, Fernandez Vara has roots in the Boston community, where people seem to do everything they can to continue to network, collaborate and share ideas.

For disciplined, independent-minded designers with broad skill sets and a desire for a strong event-oriented community, Boston definitely has a unique feel.

Mars rover examines rock close up

Nasa's Curiosity rover has completed its first close-contact science.

The robot pushed its arm instruments up against a pyramidal rock to assess the atomic elements that were present.

The rock - dubbed "Jake Matijevic" after a late rover engineer - was not expected to have high research value. Rather, it was regarded as an early opportunity to demonstrate the performance of the arm's "hand lens" and X-ray spectrometer.

Curiosity has now continued driving.

On Monday, it moved some 42m (138ft), the single biggest roll for the robot since landing seven weeks ago in Mars' equatorial Gale Crater.

The vehicle is endeavouring to get to location that scientists have nicknamed Glenelg, which satellite images have indicated is a junction between three types of geological terrain.

It is at Glenelg that Curiosity will likely use one of its key arm tools - its drill - for the first time.

Exploring Mars: Timeline

  • 1965: First detailed images of Mars returned after successful flyby of Mariner 4
  • 2005: Radar data reveals the presence of large quantities of water ice on the planet
  • 2007: The Mars Exploration Rovers find evidence that water once flowed on the surface
  • 2008: The Phoenix lander directly samples water ice in shallow Martian soil
  • 2012: The Mars Curiosity rover prepares to study a dark rock, named "Jake Matijevic"

Source: BBC Science

Even before the rover gets to the junction, it will look for some suitable soil to scoop and deliver to its onboard laboratories for analysis.

Nasa's $2.6bn mission touched down on the Red Planet on 6 August (GMT).

Much of the time since then has been spent commissioning the immensely complex, six-wheeled machine and its suite of 10 instruments.

The Jake Matijevic investigation allowed the science team to use the X-ray spectrometer (APXS) and the hand lens (Mahli) in unison with the rover's infrared laser instrument (ChemCam).

The laser, which sits atop the rover's mast, also determines the chemical composition of targets, and the rock experiment meant researchers could do some cross-calibration of APXS and ChemCam.

Little information has been released by Nasa about what it saw, but then the pyramidal rock was not expected to be anything more than a standard lump of Martian basalt.

As the mission progresses, APXS and ChemCam, along with the keen eye of Mahli, will be used to survey the crater's surface for more interesting rocks. When they identify a fascinating target, it is at that point that the drill will be commanded to acquire a sample for detailed scrutiny in the onboard laboratories.

Curiosity's mission has been funded for one Martian year (two Earth years) of study. It will try to determine in that time whether past environments at Gale Crater could ever have supported microbial life.

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

The Best Travel Insurance Money Can Buy ? A Passport - Marshall ...

You heard it here first. I read Chris Elliott?s online columns almost everyday. Sometimes I come away a little miffed?.like when he bad-mouths frequent flier programs, and other times I learn something I didn?t know. And still in other instances (like yesterday?s column), I see a stark reminder of what I think should be obvious, but apparently isn?t. What the heck am I talking about? NOW HEAR THIS ? IF YOU ARE TRAVELING OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA YOU NEED A PASSPORT.

I realize this isn?t news to most Boardingarea.com readers as the primary clientele are interested in airplane travel. What you may not know is that as a US citizen traveling on a ?closed loop? cruise that begins and ends at the same US port, you are allowed to travel with a nothing more than a birth certificate and a picture ID.?The cruise industry fought hard to carve out this exception for closed loop cruises. I can only assume that they thought a requirement for passports would cost them business. Perhaps it would.?However, just because you can do something does not mean that you should. The definition of what is valid and what is not in regards to immigration documents other than passports is subject to a little too much interpretation if you ask me.

Planning a cruise? Thinking about attempting to travel with your birth certificate and a picture ID? Please don?t do it. Get a passport. It?s the cheapest travel insurance money can buy.

PFT: Angry Belichick grabs ref on way off field

New England Patriots v Baltimore RavensGetty Images

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco?s been begging for it for years.

Sunday night, he earned the respect he?s been looking for.

The Ravens quarterback stood toe-to-toe with Patriots counterpart Tom Brady, and came out the winner in a classic 31-30 decision.

Flacco was 28-of-40 for 382 yards and three touchdowns, the kind of signature win people keep expecting him to not get. At this point, he?s gotten those kind of wins often enough we really shouldn?t be surprised any longer.

Granted, he needed Justin Tucker?s just-in 27-yard field goal to win it (exorcising the demons of Billy Cundiff), but did everything he needed to do to move to 2-1.

Here are five more things we learned on Sunday Night Football:

1. God bless Torrey Smith, for the strength he showed coming to the stadium hours after his brother died in a motorcycle accident.

That he excelled on the field, catching six passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns made his story more touching, that he faced adversity and pushed through it.

But playing this game might be the easiest thing he does this week. Hopefully he has the same strength in the days to come, as well as the time and space to grieve.

2. The Ravens defense lacks a certain sizzle.

They?re still solid, but without outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, there?s a clear difference in what they?re putting on the field. The other parts can?t be as effective without the pressure he provides.

No group with Haloti Ngata, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed is going to be ordinary (although Ray Lewis isn?t RAY LEWIS anymore), but the lack of a consistent pass rush is going to keep them from becoming a truly elite group.

In other words, meeting their own established standard.

3. The Patriots are obviously smart.

Sometimes they seem to fall in love with their own cleverness, however, and make it more difficult on themselves than it has to be.

Plays such as the oddball-reverse to Julian Edelman (which Ravens linebacker Courtney Upshaw destroyed for a big loss, giving the Ravens a spark at a time they looked lifeless) are cuter than they need to be.

Couple it with their menagerie of backs of all shapes and sizes (mostly small), and it smacks of Josh McDaniels and Bill Belichick congratulating themselves for doing things others can?t.

Psst, fellas, here?s the secret to the Patriots offense: You have Tom Brady.

It doesn?t have to be that hard.

4. That being said, the amount of freaking out about Wes Welker the first two weeks was clearly over the top.

Because they tinker, and because they spread it around, it?s senseless to think he wasn?t going to get his chances, contract issues notwithstanding.

With a 59-yard reception early, and eight catches for 142 yards, it?s clear they?re going to give him plenty of chances.

5. Ravens cornerback Cary Williams isn?t as bad as he looked at times Sunday night.

But he has the misfortune of playing opposite Lardarius Webb, which means he?s? going to be targeted more often than he would playing anywhere else.

He turned down an extension offer from the Ravens in August, but needs to play better on national television if he?s going to do better on the open market.

Obama sits down with David Letterman - should Merkel take notes?

President Obama made a smart move by going on the Late Show with David Letterman, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel could benefit from something similar? if only she could pull it off.

By Rieke Havertz,?Contributor / September 19, 2012

Seated with talk show host David Letterman, U.S. President Barack Obama makes an appearance on the 'Late Show with David Letterman' at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, Tuesday.

Kevin Lamarque

Thanks to a heads up from the local news last night, I got to watch President Barack Obama on the "Late Show with David Letterman." I figured if it was big enough to make the nightly news I should watch, but I didn't expect much more than staged jokes, dull conversation, and campaign messaging.

But after the initial chitchat ended ? and President Obama had the audience on his side after cracking a joke about not wanting to see host David Letterman naked ? I understood why the president went on air with the late night host. I also wondered whether it was something German Chancellor Angela Merkel should consider when running for re-election next year.

The setting is perfect: It's free television time on a national level and gives the incumbent a big platform for presenting both his ideas and his personality. I didn't expect Mr. Letterman to let Obama talk about the national debt for more than three minutes, let alone the gridlock in Congress for almost four, but that's what he did.

For Obama it was a way to reach voters who might not be interested enough in politics to follow election coverage closely but enjoy their late night talk shows. His choice of words might have been simple ? referring to "two wars on a credit card" when talking about the national debt ? but his message, peppered as it was with stories about his children and the White House garden, stuck.

Germany has already adopted the US debate culture, so why not appear on talk shows too? Former Chancellor Gerhard Schr?der tried that when he appeared on the popular evening game show "Wetten, dass...?" ("Wanna bet this...?) in 1999, but it didn't really catch on with other politicians. Last year Chancellor Merkel turned down an offer to appear on the show, which was hosted by the popular Thomas Gottschalk until the end of last season.

Maybe it's because Merkel is not quite the hip politician Obama is and likes to keep her personal life private. But even though German elections are never as personality-driven as they are in the US, the candidates still need to appeal to voters, and this is an ideal way to do that.?

Take former Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, who stepped down in 2011 after the disclosure that he had plagiarized his doctoral thesis. Even in the middle of that controversy, he remained one of the most popular politicians in Germany, partly because he knew how to spin the headlines with well-crafted appearances, showing up in an AC/DC T-shirt at a concert or getting his picture taken at tourist hub Times Square on a trip to the US.

Even if Merkel does not want to trade personal stories with Letterman like Obama did, appearing on a carefully chosen entertainment TV show and sharing just a little bit of about her personal life while going long on economic policy and government spending could be an easy way to get the message out to the average Joe ? or in this case, Otto Normalverbraucher.

Rumors are that Mr. Gottschalk is planning a comeback with a show airing on public broadcaster ARD. That could be a nice match.

Protesting Libyans overrun militant compound

Thousands of Libyans stormed the headquarters of an Islamist militia group in Benghazi Friday night in a deadly exchange. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated 5:20 p.m. ET:?An Islamist militia was driven out of the city of Benghazi early on Saturday in a surge of protest against the armed groups that control large parts of Libya more than a year after the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.

A spokesman for Ansar al-Shariah said the group had evacuated its bases in Benghazi "to preserve security in the city."?

In a dramatic sign of Libya's fragility, the crowd swept through the base and?went on to attack a pro-government militia, believing them to be Islamists, triggering an armed response in which at least 11 people were killed and more than 60 wounded, according to Reuters.

Ansar al-Shariah is the militant al-Qaida inspired group that some allege played a role in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that left four Americans dead, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The invasion of its compound, which met little resistance, appeared to be part of a coordinated sweep of militia bases by police, government troops and activists following a mass public demonstration against militia units in Benghazi on Friday.?

The two main Islamist militias in Derna, a city in eastern Libya known as an Islamist stronghold, withdrew from their five military bases and announced they were disbanding, residents said on Saturday.

"Abu Slim had three camps and Ansar al-Sharia had two. So it's five. Empty. All empty," Siraj Shennib, a 29-year-old linguistics professor who has been part of protests against the militia, said by telephone.

While the late Friday protests in Benghazi were planned in advance though social networking sites and flyers, the storming of the heavily armed militia headquarters took many by surprise.

Demonstrators pulled down militia flags and set a vehicle on fire inside what was once the base of Gadhafi's security forces who tried to put down the first protests that sparked last year's uprising.

Hundreds of men waving swords and even a meat cleaver chanted "Libya, Libya," "No more al-Qaida!" and "The blood we shed for freedom shall not go in vain!"?

"After what happened at the American consulate, the people of Benghazi had enough of the extremists," demonstrator Hassan Ahmed said. "They did not give allegiance to the army. So the people broke in and they fled.?

An armed Libyan man flashes the victory sign in front of a fire at the hardline Islamist group Ansar el-Sharia headquarters in Benghazi on Friday.

"This place is like the Bastille. This is where Gadhafi controlled Libya from, and then Ansar al-Shariah took it over. This is a turning point for the people of Benghazi."

'Benghazi will be your inferno!'
Adusalam al-Tarhouni, a government worker who arrived with the first wave of protesters, said several pickup trucks with Ansar fighters had initially confronted the protesters and opened fire. Two protesters were shot in the leg, he said.?

"After that they got into their trucks and drove away," he said. Protesters had freed four prisoners found inside, he said.?

Continuing to chant anti-Ansar slogans, the crowd, swelling into the thousands, moved on to try to storm a separate compound where the powerful pro-government Rafallah al-Sahati militia was entrusted with guarding a big weapons store, and opened fire on the assailants.

Looters carried weapons out of the compound as men chanted: "Say to Ansar al-Shariah: 'Benghazi will be your inferno!'"

As parts of the Muslim world fire up with anti-American protests, thousands rally to support America in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three others were killed a week earlier. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Officials at three hospitals told a Reuters correspondent they had a total of five dead and more than 60 wounded from the night's violence.

A trail of blood near two abandoned cars led police to six more dead bodies near the Rafallah al-Sahati compound on Saturday morning, police officer Ahmed Ali Agouri said.

"We came as peaceful protesters. When we got there they started shooting at us," student Sanad al-Barani said. "Five people were wounded beside me. They used 14.5 mm machineguns."

After Libya, renewed questions about al-Qaida?

The withdrawal of Ansar al-Shariah across Benghazi and the huge outpouring of public support for the government suggests an extraordinary transformation in a country where the authorities had seemed largely powerless to curb the influence of militia groups armed with heavy weapons.

Nevertheless, Ansar al-Shariah and other Islamist militias have bases elsewhere in eastern Libya, notably around the coastal city of Derna, known across the region as a major recruitment centre for fighters who joined the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.?

'No to militias'
The militias, a legacy of the rag-tag popular forces that fought Gadhafi's regime, tout themselves as protectors of Libya's revolution, providing security where police cannot. But they now face public criticism and are accused of acting like gangs, detaining and intimidating rivals and carrying out killings.?

Thousands of people march in Benghazi during a protest against militias on Friday. The Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate that killed four Americans was the spark that ignited growing frustration with the armed groups that have proliferated since the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi.

Libyan military chief of staff Youssef al-Mangoush said three big militias ? Rafallah Sahati, Feb. 17 and Libya Shield ? are considered "pro-government" and warned protesters against pushing for what he described as "counter-revolution" goals. The government heavily depended on Rafallah Sahati, for example, to secure Benghazi during the country's first national elections in July in decades. The militia took its name from an Islamist fighter who battled fiercely against Gadhafi's forces earlier in the revolution.

But most of Libya's militias still answer to their commanders before the state. Protesters, like those on Friday, want the fighters to be trained outside Benghazi and follow state army orders as individual soldiers and not as part of a militia. Many of the militiamen are unruly and undisciplined civilians who raised arms during the eight-month war.

Mohammed al-Megarif, head of Libya's General National Congress, ordered protesters to leave alone militias that are "under state legitimacy, and go home." Nearly seven hours of clashes ended shortly after his demand that was broadcast on local Libyan TV channels.?

Although the main demands of the marchers on Friday did not mention the attack on the U.S. Consulate, it seems to have provided a strong impetus for the authorities to rally support behind the country's weak government.

Some protesters carried signs reading "The ambassador was Libya's friend" and "Libya lost a friend," the AP reported.

"I don't want to see armed men wearing Afghani-style clothes stopping me in the street to give me orders, I only want to see people in uniform," said Omar Mohammed, a university student who took part in the takeover told AP.
