Food Network Facebook Page Inundated With Angry Paula Deen Fans

Food Network's Facebook page has become inundated with angry Paula Deen fans upset that she has been dropped from the network.

The most recent post by the Food Network, a photo with a recipe link for zucchini casserole, has over 800 comments as of 6:30 p.m. on Friday. While there are comments on both sides, a large majority of the comments skew to the angry and racist side. One thing's for sure: there are a lot of die-hard Paula Deen fans out there.

Of Course the NSA Can Keep Inadvertently Acquired Data on US Citizens

Of Course the NSA Can Keep Inadvertently Acquired Data on US CitizensThe Guardian has obtained a series of documents which reveal that, while the NSA is expected to "minimize" collection of data suspected to belong to US citizens, any "inadvertently acquired" domestic communications can still be kept and used without a warrant.

US officials have been at pains to insist that the NSA is only supposed to target non-domestic communications. But the series of guidelines, approved by the secret FISA court and Attorney General Eric Holder back in 2009, outline how domestic US communications can be retained for five years under the right conditions:

  • If communications are "reasonably believed to contain evidence of a crime that has been, is being, or is about to be committed"
  • If communications are encrypted
  • If communications are "reasonably believed" to be of use in maintaining cybersecurity

The guidelines also explain how "unminimized" communications can be handed straight over to the FBI or the CIA, if those agencies specify their own "minimization" procedures. Coming on the back of Obama happily claiming that data collection policies outlined in Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act (FAA) "does not apply to any US person", it looks like the government is sending out some mixed messages. LOS ANGELES (June 21, 2013) Corneal blindness affects roughly 8 million people worldwide, and traditional treatments and surgical interventions have seen little long-term success. With a new vision for stem cell corneal transplantation, and a $1.25 million grant from the National Eye Institute, Cedars-Sinai co-investigators Alexander V. Ljubimov, PhD, FARVO, and Clive Svendsen, PhD, hope to treat previously untreatable patients suffering with corneal blindness.

"Our proposed and first-of-a-kind research deals with collecting human eye cells, reprograming them back in time to a stem cell state and then using them to create a corneal cell source for transplantation. If successful, this could result in future human clinical trials that may lead to improved vision and overall quality of life," said Ljubimov, principal investigator of the grant and director of the Eye Program at the Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute. "We are first experimenting with allogeneic cells from eye donors, but hope to use person's own cells in the near future."

A common cause of corneal blindness is limbal epithelial stem cell deficiency, which means that a patient's history of genetics or eye injuries results in corneal scarring, blood vessel growth, and outgrowth of conjunctiva, all of which lead to vision loss.

This stem cell therapy approach uses induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), which are adult cells that are genetically reprogrammed to function as embryonic stem cells. Typically, iPSC technology has used stem cells from other places in the patient's body, such as the skin, or from donor cells. However, advances in stem cell technology could make it possible for doctors to harvest stem cells from a patient's own cornea or sclera (the white of the eye) and then transplant the reprogrammed cells back into the cornea of the patient.

"If successful, this new approach may pave the way for human trials in patients affected by limbal epithelial stem cell deficiency," said Svendsen, director of the Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute. "The engineering of a patient's own adult stem cells to embryonic stem-like cells for the use in corneal transplantation may provide a noteworthy treatment alternative to patients affected worldwide."

Svendsen and Ljubimov lead a highly respected research team that includes Mehrnoosh Saghizadeh, PhD, co-investigator of the grant and assistant professor of surgery; Yaron Rabinowitz, MD, director of Ophthalmology Research and co-investigator of the grant; and Dhruv Sareen, PhD, director of the Regenerative Medicine Institute's iPSC core facility.

The research project grant is the first NIH R01 grant awarded to the newly established Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute and was given under the application "Stem Cell Approaches to Developing New Therapies for Ocular Diseases."

This grant aims to restore function in diseased eye tissues through the revitalization of existing cells or the transplantation of new cells. The National Eye Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, leads the federal government's research on the visual system and eye diseases and supports basic and clinical science programs that result in the development of sight-saving treatments.

Legal updates: UFC expects positive outcome in Boston, but no MMA in NY this year

Because MMA was once outlawed in several states, a patchwork of laws govern the sport across the country. This week has been a big one for the UFC to wade through legal red tape as it works on Boston and New York.

-- In Boston, there is an issue with the documentation foreign-born fighters must have to work in Massachusetts for the first UFC on Fox Sports 1 show. Basically, the law won't necessarily keep fighters off the card, but it will create a whole lot more work for the UFC. The UFC is expecting a "positive outcome" with this issue.

-- MMA won't have such a positive outcome in a state a short drive from Boston. The UFC has been lobbying to legalize MMA in New York for years, and for a while, it seemed like this year could be the year MMA would finally break through. Unfortunately, the New York legislature failed to bring the MMA bill to a vote, meaning the sport has to wait until next year.

Understandably, the UFC is disappointed. Here's what UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta had to say about it.

This year?s new, absurd, offensive, and completely erroneous charge used to justify the defeat of MMA legislation was that MMA is anti-woman and leads to domestic violence. This is a deception fabricated by a Las Vegas union that is recklessly and callously trying to use an important societal issue to try and punish the UFC. It isn?t honest and doesn?t work.

Fertitta pointed out that one of the fighters the union in Las Vegas has been most upset about is Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. This union, which has a problem with Fertitta's Station Casinos non-union status, didn't protest when Jackson signed with Bellator. If they truly thought MMA -- and not the Fertitta-owned UFC -- was the problem, wouldn't they send press releases and fill up Twitter decrying Bellator and World Series of Fighting and every other promotion out there?

Hands-free talking and texting are unsafe for drivers, study shows

June 12, 2013 ? Using hands-free devices to talk, text or send e-mail while driving is distracting and risky, contrary to what many people believe, says a new University of Utah study issued today by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

"Our research shows that hands-free is not risk-free," says University of Utah psychology Professor David Strayer, lead author of the study, which he conducted for the foundation arm of the nonprofit AAA, formerly known as the American Automobile Association.

"These new, speech-based technologies in the car can overload the driver's attention and impair their ability to drive safely," says Strayer. "An unintended consequence of trying to make driving safer -- by moving to speech-to-text, in-vehicle systems -- may actually overload the driver and make them less safe."

"Just because you can update Facebook while driving doesn't mean that it is safe to do so," he adds. "Don't assume that if your eyes are on the road and your hands are on the wheel that you are unimpaired. If you don't pay attention then you are a potential hazard on the roadway."

In a 2006 study, Strayer first showed talking on a hands-free cell phone was just as distracting as using a hand-held phone while driving, but the message has failed to fully connect with the public, with many people believing hands-free devices are safer. But now, with the backing of the AAA, Strayer hopes people realize they are risking their lives and those of others by using distracting hands-free phone, e-mailing, texting and social media technologies while driving.

Strayer conducted the study with these other members of the University of Utah Department of Psychology: Joel M. Cooper, research assistant professor of psychology; and doctoral students Jonna Turrill, James Coleman and Nate Medeiros-Ward and Francesco Biondi.

New research reveals that voice-activated in-car technologies dangerously undermine driver attention

Hands-free technologies might make it easier for motorists to text, talk on the phone, or even use Facebook while they drive, but new findings from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety show dangerous mental distractions exist even when drivers keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

The research found that as mental workload and distractions increase, reaction time slows, brain function is compromised, drivers scan the road less and miss visual cues, potentially resulting in drivers not seeing items right in front of them including stop signs and pedestrians.

This is the most comprehensive study of its kind to look at the mental distraction of drivers and arms AAA with evidence to appeal to the public to not use these voice-to-text features while their vehicle is in motion.

With a predicted five-fold increase in infotainment systems in new vehicles by 2018, AAA is calling for action as result of this landmark research.

"There is a looming public safety crisis ahead with the future proliferation of these in-vehicle technologies," said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. "It's time to consider limiting new and potentially dangerous mental distractions built into cars, particularly with the common public misperception that hands-free means risk-free."

Cognitive distraction expert David Strayer and his research team at the University of Utah measured brainwaves, eye movement and other metrics to assess what happens to drivers' mental workload when they attempt to do multiple things at once, building upon decades of research in the aerospace and automotive industries. The research included:

-- Cameras mounted inside an instrumented car to track eye and head movement of drivers.

-- A Detection-Response-Task device known as the "DRT" was used to record driver reaction time in response to triggers of red and green lights added to their field of vision.

-- A special electroencephalographic (EEG)-configured skull cap was used to chart participants' brain activity so that researchers could determine mental workload.

Using established research protocols borrowed from aviation psychology and a variety of performance metrics, drivers engaged in common tasks, from listening to an audio book or talking on the phone to listening and responding to voice-activated emails while behind the wheel.

Researchers used the results to rate the levels of mental distraction drivers experienced while performing each of the tasks. Similar to the Saffir-Simpson scale used for hurricanes, the levels of mental distraction are represented on a scale:

-- Tasks such as listening to the radio ranked as a category "1" level of distraction or a minimal risk.

-- Talking on a cell-phone, both handheld and hands-free, resulted in a "2" or a moderate risk.

-- Listening and responding to in-vehicle, voice-activated email features increased mental workload and distraction levels of the drivers to a "3" rating or one of extensive risk.

"These findings reinforce previous research that hands-free is not risk-free," said AAA Foundation President and CEO Peter Kissinger. "Increased mental workload and cognitive distractions can lead to a type of tunnel vision or inattention blindness where motorists don't see potential hazards right in front of them."

Based on this research, AAA urges the automotive and electronics industries to join us in exploring:

-- Limiting use of voice-activated technology to core driving-related activities such as climate control, windshield wipers and cruise control, and to ensure these applications do not lead to increased safety risk due to mental distraction while the car is moving.

-- Disabling certain functionalities of voice-to-text technologies such as using social media or interacting with e-mail and text messages so that they are inoperable while the vehicle is in motion.

-- Educating vehicle owners and mobile device users about the responsible use and safety risks for in-vehicle technologies.

Obama political value unclear amid controversy

BOSTON (AP) ? Trailed by controversy, President Barack Obama pressed ahead with efforts to boost Democrats Wednesday in Boston and Miami, raising questions about whether the second-term president will be more asset or liability to his party in the coming election season.

Fulfilling a pledge to work harder to help elect Democrats than he did in years past, Obama came to Massachusetts to rally voters before of a nationally watched special Senate election later this month. He stops in Miami in the evening to raise cash at two private homes for the Democratic Party.

Each stop lends Obama's proven ability to energize Democrats to the party's cause this year and next, with control of Congress and Obama's second-term agenda at stake. The visits also create opportunities for Republicans eager to link their Democratic opponents to the Obama administration's recent troubles, including controversies involving the Internal Revenue Service and government intelligence-gathering.

Even in Democrat-friendly Massachusetts, there are signs of modest declines in Obama's popularity as Republicans seize on the White House's struggles in the June 25 special election to replace John Kerry and in nascent campaigns across the nation.

"We hope that the president thinks he's going to be an asset, and goes all over the place," said Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman. "When you look at how the candidates are reacting, so far the early ones are running away fast."

Rep. Ed Markey, the Democratic hopeful in Massachusetts, last week criticized the government's massive collection of personal phone and Internet records, even as Obama defended the practice. The disclosures about the National Security Agency surveillance came with the administration already facing questions over the IRS' improper targeting of conservative groups, the seizure of journalists' phone records and the handling of the attack in Libya last year that left four Americans dead.

After Air Force One landed, Obama was greeted at the foot of the stairs by Markey, Gov. Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino, who is on crutches after recent surgery. The group headed for the jam-packed Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe in Boston's South End to schmooze with diners and workers.

"This guy has been fighting for Massachusetts for a very long time," Obama said of Markey, a current House member who was elected in 1976. Obama said the June 25 election is important and that he came to Massachusetts "to make sure everybody turns out and votes."

In Massachusetts, 60 percent of likely voters in the coming special election give the president favorable marks, according to a Suffolk University poll released this week. While a strong number, that's a decline from last month. Nationally, Obama's approval ratings are hovering at just under 50 percent.

"The numbers that you've seen dropping nationally are dropping here as well," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center. "There are some Massachusetts voters who are beginning to question the administration on some of these issues."

At a minimum, the shift complicates the president's promise to go all out for the party in the 2014 elections, mindful that sending more Democrats to Congress could be the difference between success and failure for key aspects of his agenda such as immigration, climate change and a budget deal. Republicans control the House, and the Democrats' Senate majority could be in jeopardy.

Democratic officials say Obama has agreed to headline at least 20 party fundraisers in and out of Washington. That's in addition to candidate-specific events like Wednesday's rally in Massachusetts. The aggressive schedule has seen Obama campaign so far this year in California, Texas, Illinois, New York and Georgia. He raised $3.25 million for House Democrats on a single day in April in San Francisco.

The president continues the effort later Wednesday with a Miami fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

But Obama probably won't attend many rallies in other places like Louisiana, Arkansas and West Virginia, where Democrats are defending Senate seats in conservative-friendly territory.

"Every candidate has to make their own decision," said David Plouffe, who ran Obama's 2008 campaign. "You don't force yourself on a campaign. If they want the help, they're going to ask."

Plouffe said the White House understands that Democrats in deep-red states will need to distance themselves publicly from Obama on some issues. But even in those states, they may want to take advantage of Obama's vaunted political operation.

"We have a lot of volunteers in every state of the country," Plouffe said. "Those volunteers are still an underappreciated secret weapon in terms of how we won."

The aggressive pace of Obama's efforts this year is a marked shift for a president criticized for doing too little to help his party win elections during his first four years in office.

In 2010, Democrats lost control of the House ? and with it, their hopes for enacting sweeping policies on the scale of Obama's health care law. In 2012, Obama's spot on the ballot helped drive Democrats to the polls, giving down-ballot Democrats a boost. But locked in a heated contest for re-election, Obama had little time to raise money or campaign for other candidates.

"There's a big difference in this race," Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday at a fundraiser for Markey, urging Democrats not to take the special election for granted. "Barack Obama's not at the head of the ticket. And that means those legions of African-Americans and Latinos are not automatically going to come out."

Democratic operatives involved with 2013 elections in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia privately concede that the White House's struggles have been a distraction but still welcomed White House assistance ? particularly with fundraising. Other White House stars have been helpful as well. Besides Biden, first lady Michelle Obama has hosted finance events for Markey and Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.

"President Obama has won Virginia twice, has a unique ability to express to voters the stakes of this election, and we'd certainly want him to campaign with us," McAuliffe spokesman Josh Schwerin said.

Other Democrats were not so sure.

The pro-Republican group America Rising PAC last week distributed a video of Arizona Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick repeatedly refusing to say whether she would campaign with Obama.

"There's a lot of frustration with the administration now," Kirkpatrick said in a local television interview.

ECB bond purchases face German legal challenge

KARLSRUHE, Germany (AP) ? A key European Central Bank program that has been credited with calming the three-year euro crisis faces a legal challenge Tuesday in Germany's highest court.

The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe is considering arguments against the ECB's offer to buy government bonds and lower borrowing costs for indebted countries.

Opponents of the bond-buying program say the program oversteps the ECB's mandate which forbid it from financing governments.

The arguments against the program, known as Outright Monetary Transactions, have been added to another challenge against Germany's ratification of the euro region's emergency bailout fund. The current challenges cite both EU laws and the German constitution's provision that only the elected national parliament can decide how taxpayer money is spent.

European Union efforts to rescue financial troubled countries have run into popular opposition in Germany, the biggest financial backer of any bailout or financial backstop due to its status as the biggest eurozone economy.

Any ruling against the OMT would likely effectively torpedo the OMT. Analysts say that an outright rejection is highly unlikely but markets are watching to see if the judges attach any conditions that might raise doubts about its effectiveness. It's also possible that some issues could be referred to the EU's own court. Karlsruhe judges will hear oral arguments Tuesday and Wednesday; a decision might not come for several months.

The OMT program was created after ECB head Mario Draghi dramatically vowed last July 26 to "do whatever it takes" to save the euro. The ECB hasn't bought any bonds. But the program's mere existence has helped lower countries' borrowing costs and eased fears the 17-country euro union might break apart. To take part the scheme, a country would have to commit to reduce its debts and deficits, as well as accept a bailout loan or credit line from the European Union's financial rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism.

By buying up the country's bonds, the ECB program would help drive up a bond's price at the same time as lowing the interest rate charged on them. This process would mean lower interest costs for governments the next time they borrow money by selling new bonds.

A key aspect behind the program's success so far is the ECB's statement that there wouldn't be any limit on how many bonds it could buy. That has kept markets wary of going against the central bank and its financial firepower.

The ECB is sending Joerg Asmussen, a former German finance ministry official who has since been appointed to the ECB's six-member executive board, to defend the program.

Also testifying is OMT critic Jens Weidmann, the head of Germany's Bundesbank national central bank. Weidmann, who sits on the 23-member ECB rate-setting council by virtue of his job as Bundesbank head, was the only member to vote against setting up the OMT program on Sept. 6 last year.

Michael Wohlgemuth, an economist with the Open Europe Berlin think tank, said Asmussen would face a balancing act, needing to both argue that the program remained within legal limits while taking care not to give the impression such limits would undermine its potential effectiveness.

"That is the trade-off that has to be made somehow ? appease the constitutional court without getting financial markets in a panic," said Wohlgemuth.

Enterprise to offer seven day a week car rental in UK | News ...

Enterprise Rent-A-Car has announced plans to open over 50 of its 370-location branch network in the UK for seven days a week.

This initiative forms an integral part of the company?s growing appeal to leisure renters.

It follows a successful trial in 2012, at 11 locations in Greater London and another seven around the UK, which saw a hugely positive response from both corporate and private customers.

This demand has prompted Enterprise to expand seven-day opening to a much wider section of its branch network.

The more than 50 locations have been specifically selected by Enterprise due to their proximity to highly populated urban areas and commuter belts.

They will provide greater flexibility and choice to anyone who needs to hire a car, whether travelling within the UK or coming from another country.

This new programme is in addition to Enterprise?s 17 UK airport locations, all of which already operate seven days a week.

Mike Nigro, managing director UK & Ireland at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, commented: ?Seven-day opening is one of the most immediately successful programmes we?ve ever introduced.

?The initial trial period showed extremely high demand for both collection and return of rental cars over the weekend.

?It?s not just airport branches that need to service customers seven days a week.

?The ability to collect or return vehicles on a Sunday rather than waiting until Monday will ensure leisure travellers throughout the UK won?t spend more than they have to on rentals.

?It offers an even more flexible approach to car and van hire.?

The branches involved will begin their weekend opening over the next six months.

Jim Kelly is 'recovering comfortably' after cancer surgery - SB Nation

Jim Kelly is reportedly recovering well from surgery Friday morning. The Hall of Famer revealed last week that he has cancer in his upper jaw bone.

Jim Kelly is "recovering comfortably" after undergoing successful jaw surgery Friday morning. The Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback revealed last week that he has cancer in his upper jaw bone. The Eric County Medical Center released a statement describing the procedure and expressed optimism for Kelly's recovery.

"At Mr. Kelly's request, we thank everyone for their concern and well wishes for him and his family. Today, Mr. Kelly underwent a partial maxillectomy to remove a squamous cell carcinoma of the upper gingival caused by chronic irritation at the gum site. He underwent reconstruction with a dental obturator. The surgery went very well.

"We are hopeful for and anticipate a speedy recovery and successful outcome.

"Mr. Kelly is recovering comfortably at this time. He is in the capable care of the great nurses and staff here at ECMC. He will remain here at the hospital until he feels comfortable to go home."

Kelly may still need to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment, though whether those procedures will be necessary is still unknown. Tomography scans of Kelly's showed that the cancer had not spread to other parts of the body. The cancer has a five-year recovery rate above 50 percent.

Kelly has had to battle several health issues over the past several years, including back and neck surgeries, and a procedure to remove a nickel-size cyst in his upper gums and nasal cavity. Thanfully, his current prognosis appears positive.

Rafael Nadal Wins French Open, Defeats David Ferrer For Historic 8th Title At Roland Garros

PARIS ? If Rafael Nadal truly was going to be challenged, if his bid for an unprecedented eighth French Open championship would be slowed even a bit, this might have been the moment.

Leading by a set and a break 70 minutes into Sunday's final against David Ferrer, another generally indefatigable Spaniard, Nadal faced four break points in one game. The last was a 31-stroke exchange, the match's longest, capped when Nadal absorbed Ferrer's strong backhand approach and transformed it into a cross-court backhand passing shot.

Ferrer glared at the ball as it flew past and landed in a corner, then smiled ruefully. What else was there to do? Dealing with Nadal's defense-to-offense on red clay is a thankless task. His rain-soaked 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ferrer was Nadal's record 59th win in 60 matches at the French Open and made him the only man with eight titles at any Grand Slam tournament.

"I never like to compare years, but it's true that this year means something very special for me," Nadal said, alluding to the way he managed to come back from a left knee injury that sidelined him for about seven months.

"When you have a period of time like I had," he added, "you realize that you don't know if you will have the chance to be back here with this trophy another time."

But he does it, year after year.

He won four French Opens in a row from 2005-08, and another four in a row from 2010-13.

"Rafael was better than me," said Ferrer, who had won all 18 sets he'd played the past two weeks to reach his first Grand Slam final at age 31. "He didn't make mistakes."

A week past his 27th birthday, Nadal now owns 12 major trophies in all ? including two from Wimbledon, one each from the U.S. Open and Australian Open ? to eclipse Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver and equal Roy Emerson for the third-most in history. Nadal trails only Roger Federer's 17 and Pete Sampras' 14.

"Winning 17 Grand Slam titles, that's miles away," Nadal said. "I'm not even thinking about it."

This was Nadal's first major tournament after a surprising second-round loss at Wimbledon last June. Since rejoining the tour in February, he is 43-2 with seven titles and two runner-up finishes. He's won his past 22 matches.

"For me, it's incredible," said Toni Nadal, Rafael's uncle and coach. "When I think of all that Rafael has done, I don't understand it."

No one, perhaps not even Ferrer himself, expected Nadal to lose Sunday.

That's because of Nadal's skill on clay, in general, and at Roland Garros, in particular, but also because of how Ferrer had fared against his friend and countryman ? and video-game competitor ? in the past.

Ferrer entered Sunday 4-19 against Nadal. On clay, Nadal had 16 consecutive victories over Ferrer, whose only head-to-head win on the surface came the first time they played, in July 2004, when Nadal was 18.

Nadal had yet to make his French Open debut then, missing it that year because of a broken left foot. On May 23, 2005, Nadal played his first match at Roland Garros, beating Lars Burgsmuller 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-1 on Court 1, known as the "bullring" because of its oval shape.

And so began the reign.

Nadal won a record 31 consecutive matches at the French Open until the fourth round in 2009, when Robin Soderling beat him. In 2010, Nadal started a new streak, which currently stands at 28.

There was occasional shakiness this year. Nadal lost the first set of each of his first two matches and was pushed to a tiebreaker to begin his third.

He barely edged No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic in a thrilling semifinal that lasted more than 4 1/2 hours and ended 9-7 in the fifth set Friday.

By any measure, that match was far more enjoyable to take in than the final, akin to dining on a filet mignon accompanied by a well-aged bottle of Bordeaux one day, then grabbing a hot dog and can of soda from a street vendor 48 hours later.

Under a leaden sky that eventually would release a steady shower from the second set on, Ferrer felt nerves at the outset, he acknowledged later. But after the players traded early breaks, Ferrer held for a 3-2 lead.

That's when Nadal took over, winning seven games in a row and 12 of 14. His court coverage was impeccable, as usual, showing no signs of any problems from that left knee, which was supported by a band of white tape. His lefty forehand whips were on-target, accounting for 19 of his 35 winners and repeatedly forcing errors from Ferrer.

When Nadal did have lapses, he admonished himself, once slapping his forehead with his right palm after pushing a lob wide. But what's demoralizing for opponents is the way Nadal slams the door when they have openings, then rushes through when he gets the slightest chance.

He was at his relentless best on key points, including those four break chances for Ferrer at 3-1 in the second set. Immediately after, Nadal broke to 5-1 on a forehand winner down the line.

As Nadal prepared to serve in the next game, a man wearing a white mask and carrying a fiery flare jumped out of the stands nearby. The intruder quickly was shoved to the ground by one security guard, while another went to protect Nadal.

"I felt a little bit scared at the first moment," Nadal said, "because I didn't see what's going on."

It happened within a few minutes of other actions by protesters, including chanting from the upper deck that briefly delayed play. Police said seven people were held for questioning.

Nadal got broken in that game, then broke back right away to take the second set.

The third set was similar to the first. It was 3-all, then suddenly over. Nadal took the last three games, ending the match with a forehand winner before dropping his racket and falling on his back, leaving a rust-colored smudge on his white shirt and flecks of clay on his stubbled cheeks. Soon he was standing, holding his index finger aloft.

Yes, Nadal is No. 1 at the French Open. When the ATP rankings are issued Monday, however, he will be No. 5, because of points he dropped while hurt.

Ferrer will be at No. 4.

"Yeah, it's strange, no? I lost the final against Rafael, but tomorrow I am going to be No. 4 and him No. 5," Ferrer said with a grin, then delivered his punch line: "I prefer to win here and to stay No. 5."

Sorry, David. This is Nadal's tournament.

Now the question becomes: Is eight enough?

On 'Game of Thrones,' you change or you die

TV

Robb Stark. Catelyn Stark. Lord Commander Mormont. These characters fell victim in some of the biggest deaths in season three of HBO's "Game of Thrones," and they all have something in common: Their inability to bend.

Yes, Lord Frey is a vindictive jerk who doesn't forgive a major insult, but Robb was unrelenting in his quest to become official King in the North. Shoulda kept your promise! As for his mom Cat, well ... revenge has a price -- say goodbye to your entire family and your own head. With Mormont, his downfall was a refusal to respond to his men's very human needs, including ... food!

Indeed, one of the lessons of the show this season is that you change or you die. And some of our favorite characters have done quite a bit of changing over the last nine episodes. Is there more to come for them? Those who've read the books already know the answer, but we can still hope!

Jaime Lannister

Image: Jaime Lannister

HBO

Perhaps no one has evolved as much as Jaime this season. He went from being a kingslaying, oathbreaking sister-lover who tried to kill an innocent boy to being a sympathetic character and fan favorite, and not because he had his most prized asset -- his sword hand -- lopped off. Turns out there's a good reason he killed King Aerys, a man he was sworn to protect: Jamie was defying orders to kill his dad, Tywin, and prevent the destruction of King's Landing and its innocents. His burgeoning relationship with Brienne of Tarth in season three also shows he's a loyal friend. Sure, he likes to make a few japes about her "ugly" mug, but he does it with love. (Left) fingers crossed for more of him going forward!

Sansa Stark

Image: Sansa Stark

HBO

Remember when she was the innocent, annoying little brat of a girl who stuck by Joffrey, right or wrong? (It's your fault Lady died, Sansa!) How everything was songs and rainbows and silly crushes for her? That Sansa is dead, and in her place now is a young woman who knows that the world is a dark place full of pain and treachery and fear. She's still eager to trust someone, anyone to get her out of King's Landing and away from Joff, but will she? Old Sansa would have without hesitation. New one? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Jon Snow

Image: Jon Snow

HBO

No longer just the bastard son of Ned Stark, Jon has slowly transformed from a dejected boy into a young man who holds on to honor as closely as his dearly departed father did, the longer he wears his black cloak of the Night's Watch. And this season has seen him change into a turncloak -- something that troubled him greatly -- even though the only way for him to serve his crow brothers and the realm was to betray them by breaking his vows. And we're not just talking about killing one of his own (RIP, Qhorin Halfhand), he also bedded Ygritte before breaking her heart. As his trials stack up, so does his growth into a smart and brave young man. These tough lessons could take him far, assuming he survives the season finale and beyond.

Daenarys Targaryen

Image: Dany Targaryen

HBO

From powerless little girl ordered around by her big brother to Mother of Dragons! Dany's rise to power has been matched only by her growth into a confident, smart, fearless, well-respected leader among her followers. She has outwitted slavers and leaders of great cities as she heads east to try to eventually conquer the West. And all the while, she's taken advice from her trusted inner circle -- when she feels it is the correct path -- and has let her wrath be known when necessary. If only Viserys could see her now, he'd probably tremble in fear, as will the many who may still cross her path in the finale.

The Hound

Image: The Hound

HBO

Who would've thought the fierce, disfigured giant of a man who kills for King Joffrey without hesitation and instills fear in the hearts of his foes would ever become even slightly likable? Yet, he has this season, thanks in part to the "Arya and Her Dog" show set within "Game of Thrones." (What, you don't enjoy the banter between the two?) Sure, he's still not the nicest guy in Westeros, but as more is revealed about him, the more sympathetic he becomes. Plus, he's been known to do a few good deeds here and there. Remember when he saved Sansa from being gang raped in King's Landing? And after the Red Wedding, he could've just taken Arya's head off since she was no longer worth any ransom money, but instead, he saved her from what would have surely been her death, too, had she stuck around the Twins. He sure does seem to be getting a bit softer as the series progresses, but whether that will help him ... well, go read the books or keep watching!

Yes, change is good, as the unbending tend to break. But as fans of the show and the books know, just because a character can adapt and grow and sneak into our hearts, that doesn't guarantee survival. After all, George R. R. Martin -- the mastermind behind the novels the show is based on -- has given plenty of warning that things will not always end well. And when characters die, it'll hurt -- a lot -- because he wants it to. Consider yourself warned for the season three finale.

"Game of Thrones" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.

At least 10 injured in Colorado hot air balloon crashes

DENVER (Reuters) - Gusty winds forced the crash landings of four hot air balloons in separate mishaps on Saturday northwest of Denver, leaving at least 10 people hurt, but none of the injuries was life-threatening, authorities said.

All of the aborted flights occurred in wide-open areas frequented by balloon enthusiasts, according to Dana Lewis, a spokesman for the Rocky Mountain Fire Protection District.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina said sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles an hour, with gusts of up to 35 mph, were reported in the area at the time of the crash landings.

Lewis said one balloon carrying 10 passengers and a pilot went down inside the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, injuring five people, one of whom suffered "a fairly significant ankle injury."

In Boulder County, a balloon with a pilot and 11 passengers "impacted the ground hard" inside a wildlife conservation area, said local sheriff's spokesman Deputy Mitch Rosebrough.

"The weather conditions were calm and warm early this morning, but changed to gusty winds at the time of the crash," Rosebrough said. Two passengers were transported to a local hospital with neck and back injuries, he said.

In neighboring Arvada, the pilot of a balloon was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and two passengers were treated at the scene after the aircraft crash landed, said Scott Pribble, spokesman for the Arvada Fire Protection District.

A fourth balloon went down in nearby Louisville, Colorado, but there were no reports of injuries.

Separately, a small airplane crashed on Saturday in a remote corner of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, about 230 miles southwest of Denver, killing one person aboard the aircraft and injuring two others, a park spokeswoman said.
