iPhone 5 accounts for half of Apple?s smartphone sales, iPhone 4S takes 30%

Jul 22, 2013 - 04:00 PM EDT ? AAPL: 426.31 (+1.36, +0.32%) | NASDAQ: 3587.615 (-23.662, -0.66%)

?With the iPhone 5 taking 52 percent and the iPhone 4S earning 30 percent of sales, the remaining 18 percent were iPhone 4 sales, according to data released on Monday by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners to AppleInsider,? Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

?The data shows how the average selling price of the iPhone has steadily declined, as customers have increasingly turned to the legacy iPhone 4S and iPhone 4,? Hughes reports. ?When the iPhone 5 first launched, early adopters helped push it to 68 percent of all iPhone sales in October 2012, but its share quickly eased to 50 percent by December.?

Hughes reports, ??iPhone 5 appears to have settled in at about half of all iPhone sales, nine months after its initial launch,? CIRP said. ?In contrast, the earlier flagship model, iPhone 4S, accounted for almost three-quarters of iPhone sales almost a year after its launch. Furthermore, iPhone 4S had 90 percent of all iPhone sales in the period immediately after launch, compared to about 70 percent for iPhone 5.??

MacDailyNews Take: This is somewhat surprising as iPhone 5 is simply the best smartphone we?ve ever used, by a wide margin. For the weight reduction alone, not to mention display size, thinness, speed, audio clarity, etc., you?d think more than one out of every two iPhone buyers would recognize the value iPhone 5 offers over legacy iPhone models.

Police Shoot Dog, Gunshots Caught On Graphic Video (NSFW)

A video of police shooting a dog to death in front of its owner has gone viral after being posted to Reddit Monday afternoon.

The dog owner, Leon Rosby, was taking video of police officers in Hawthorne, Calif. as they barricaded a house, CBS reports.

Another bystander behind Rosby was recording him, and can be heard saying that Rosby asked the police why there weren't any black cops present. This drew the attention of two Hawthorne police officers, who started to approach Rosby.

Rosby can then be seen putting his dog, which looks like a Rottweiler, into his car and voluntarily putting his hands behind his back to be arrested. As he was being handcuffed by the officers, the dog started barking and jumped out of the car.

As the dog approached the officers, barking, the police shot the dog several times. Police said they had no choice but to shoot as the dog lunged towards them.

"It looks like the officer tried to reach down and grab the leash, and then the dog lunges in the direction of him and the other officers there," Hawthorne police Lt. Scott Swain said to the Daily Breeze. "And I know it's the dog's master, and more than likely not going to attack him, (but) we've got a guy handcuffed that's kind of defenseless. We have a duty to defend him, too."

Rosby's attorney, Michael Gulden, told CBS that he plans to file a lawsuit against the Hawthorne Police Department. He said the incident took place at 137th Street and Jefferson.

The bystander uploaded the video of Rosby's arrest and the dog's death, undated, to YouTube on June 30.

Two hours after it was posted to Reddit, the video had 32,000 upvotes, but the comments were disabled because of Reddit's rule against, "witch-hunting or or incitement to witch hunt. This means no demanding 'Reddit justice' in any way in post titles or comments."

Lightning electric motorcycle bests gas-powered bikes at Pikes Peak

Lightning electric motorcycle bests gas-powered bikes at Pikes Peak

With 156 turns over its 12.42 miles (19.99 km) course and elevation changes ranging from 4,720 ft (1,440 m) to 14,110 ft (4,300 m), Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the most grueling races in the world for both humans and machines. It's particularly challenging for gas-powered vehicles, since the air contains less oxygen at higher altitudes. As a result, electric cars and motorcycles have gained popularity at the event in recent years. In fact, 2013 marks the first time an electric bike's beaten its gas-powered rivals, with Carlin Dunne and Lightning Motorcycles finishing the race in 10 minutes 0.694 seconds -- ahead of Bruno Langlois who managed 10 minutes and 21.323 seconds on a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. While electric vehicles are expected to dominate Pikes Peak in the near future, it's going to take a few more years before autonomous cars win the event.
