BII REPORT: Here Are The Major Players In Mobile Advertising ...

mWe are in the post-PC era, and soon billions of consumers will be carrying around Internet-connected mobile devices for up to 16 hours a day.?Mobile audiences have exploded as a result.

Mobile advertising should be a bonanza, similar to online advertising a decade ago. However, it has been a bit slow off the ground, and its growth trajectory is not clear cut.

In a recent report?from?BI?Intelligence?on the mobile advertising ecosystem,?we?explain the complexities and fractures, and examine the central and dynamic roles played by mobile ad networks, demand side platforms, mobile ad exchanges, real-time bidding, agencies, brands, and new companies hoping to upend the traditional banner ad.

Here's an overview of some major players in the mobile advertising ecosystem:

  • Mobile ad networks:?Mobile ad networks aggregate advertising inventory and match it with advertisers, much as online ad networks do.?Networks soak up ad inventory, analyze its potential, and sell it by matching it to advertisers' needs.?Where networks differentiate is in value-added services, such as aggregating buying power to strike better deals, or improve targeting.?The largest ad networks have their own sales forces reaching out to advertisers, as well as their own campaign optimization technology.?
  • Demand side platforms (DSPs):?These function similarly to ad networks, in the sense that they help match advertisers with inventory, but tend to work hand-in-glove with brands.?DSPs are complementary to the ad network business because they more richly describe mobile audiences.?But once DSPs start hiring their own staff to sell ad inventory, the complementarity could end, and DSPs would compete more head-on with ad networks.
  • Mobile ad exchanges: ?Exchanges automate many parts of the mobile ad process, and can connect publishers with multiple ad networks.?Ad exchanges are primarily supply-facing at the moment, and have relatively few interactions with mobile ad agencies (even less so with brands).?Agencies are disincentivized from using exchanges because they threaten their lucrative role as the brands' media buyers.
  • Mobile Ad Agencies and Mobile Marketing: ?One of the gripes you often hear around the mobile ad industry is that agencies don't get it.?According to the U.K.'s Association of Online Publishers, 55 percent of publishers blamed "agencies' attitude" for low mobile ad revenues. That may be changing. Several people we talked to said agencies are doubling down on mobile, and competency is improving.
  • Natives:?Other companies are emerging that don't neatly fit the established categories.?They resemble ad networks in that they connect advertisers with publishers' inventory, but they express disdain for the traditional mobile advertising model.?These companies are trying to find a native approach to mobile advertising that will break through consumers' apparent disdain for mobile ads. We call them "the natives."

Tough economic news highlights need for bipartisan jobs focus

By REP. PETER BARCA ??Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012

With the next legislative session just weeks away, it is time for us to devote serious focus to the most important issue facing Wisconsin?creating good-paying jobs and doing so as quickly as possible.

If we don?t act now in a bipartisan manner on stimulating job growth and closing the skills gap, Wisconsin will continue to fall further behind our neighbors and the country as a whole. We?re already seeing evidence of what a lack of focus on jobs is doing to our state.

In its annual list of ?Best States for Business,? Forbes magazine ranked Wisconsin 42nd for 2012, down from 40th the previous year. Forbes also projects that Wisconsin will have the second-worst job growth in the nation through 2016.

In a survey released last month by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, one in five of its member companies indicated plans to cut jobs over the next six months. That is the highest percentage reported by this survey since the height of the recession in 2009.

Federal jobs numbers also show Wisconsin had the second-worst job growth in the country during the past year. And the nonpartisan fact-checker Politifact gave Gov. Walker its worst rating for his claim that nearly 100,000 private-sector jobs had been created in Wisconsin since he took office.

The governor?s centerpiece campaign promise was to create 250,000 jobs. He went as far as saying he would tattoo that number on his cabinet secretaries? foreheads. But he has not had the aggressiveness and focus necessary to keep that promise.

Numerous factors are behind Wisconsin?s lackluster jobs performance during the past few years. Between Republicans spending more time on divisive social issues and the state?s job creation agency being plagued by a revolving door of leadership, poor management and the lack of a business plan, it?s not surprising that so many people are still looking for work.

In the first week of the last legislative session, Democrats introduced a package of bills designed to help put people back to work quickly. We also put forward legislation during the past session designed to close the skills gap and connect workers with available jobs. We intend to re-introduce many of these same proposals this session.

Clearly we cannot afford another two years like the last two years. But we are committed to finding solutions to our most pressing problems and creating a stable, prosperous economy and secure future for middle-class families.

home improvement | green solid surface countertops

Solid surface countertops have become more popular in the past decade and they are an excellent addition to either the kitchen or bathroom. However, with numerous manufacturers and products out there, it can be hard to choose the right one, particularly when you are trying to decipher which product is the most environmentally conscious.

Most solid surface countertops are made with new materials and a petroleum-based binder. Not the most earth-friendly option. One product that we like is ECO by Cosentina since they use a corn oil-based binder and their countertops are made up of 75 percent recycled materials such as mirror, glass, porcelain, earthenware and vitrified ash. Additionally, the company really does walk the walk: they recycle 94% of their water, use no solvents for the maintenance and cleaning of machinery, use advanced filtering systems and they continue to develop technology that will allow them to produce eco-friendly products. In addition to having received many awards, ECO by Cosentina has received certification from GreenGuard and from Cradle to Cradle as well as LEED.

Besides all of the green benefits of ECO, you need to know if it really is a good quality product. ECO It is a very hard surface and has extremely low water absorption and porosity making it a great product for your next kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. Additionally, it is very stylish and comes in a wide range of colors with the option of either a shiny or matte finish.

Maintenance on this product is also straightforward:
? Clean all spills immediately after they occur
? Cleaning can be done with simple soap and water or with a gentle pH-balanced house cleaner
? Chemical sealants should never be used

If you?re looking for environmentally conscious products during your bathroom remodeling, don?t hesitate to talk to your supplier or bathroom remodeler? about solid surface countertops and the benefits that they offer. They should be able to offer you plenty of guidance based on their years of experience. I also recommend joining some online forums to find out what types of experiences other consumers have had with their countertops.

Do you have any experiences with solid surface countertops? Tell us about them in our comments section below.

Key Tips To Further Personal Development - ProjectPB ? The ...

Improving your character and personality are vital to any program of self improvement. It helps you become a more grounded, educated person who fulfills any goal you puts your mind to. This article will give you many ideas for working on your self improvement. Try to improve slowly, and you?ll be able better understand who you are.

To grow in your own development, you must first acknowledge areas in which you are weak. You will want to learn all you can, once you realize that you have only scratched the surface of all there is to be known. Once this idea gets instilled in your mind, you will want to know, understand and learn new things, therefore, improving yourself.

You can?t change unless you make a directed, continuous effort to do so. You have to determine exactly what you want and consciously decide to work toward it.

TIP! Failure at some task can seem like a devastating injury to your self confidence. However, failure should be a way that you can learn.

Seek out other like-minded individuals. This will reinforce the aspects of your personality that you are seeking to develop, while allowing you to distance yourself from toxic individuals in your life.

You must determine what you would like to achieve in your life. Once you?ve done this, get out there and do it. Sitting and thinking about the life you want will not get you that life. You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen.

Ultimate happiness may lie in assuming a manageable amount of risk. When you take risks, you may end up feeling like you?ve failed or been rejected. But if you just stay in your comfort zone, you will eventually become dissatisfied. It takes courage to take risks, but doing so can help make you happier for the future.

TIP! It takes willpower to increase the goodness of your life, so if you spread that to others, you can get some too. You should only be positive in your wishes for others.

Make the most of your work time to accomplish more. The easy way to do this is to simply take more breaks during your work day. This might seem counterproductive, but having constant breaks will help you recharge and unwind, so that you will get a lot more things done when you go back to working.

In order to have a lifestyle that you love, set goals that you are sure that you can accomplish. Identify your weaknesses and strive to overcome them so you can become a stronger, better person.

Try talking to the pastor at your church, or a therapist; it can help. These people are experienced and will know what to do in your situation. These impartial listeners can provide a sympathetic ear or help you deal with troublesome areas of your life. If you speak to a professional you will feel much happier and healthier.

TIP! It?s nearly impossible to become the greatest of champions without a great coach to guide you. It?s important that every champion has a fantastic coach or mentor.

A great tip for personal development is to make sure that you place value on what you consider to be the best. You should always strive to do your best in all aspects of your life.

It is important to have an accurate understanding of the distance you must travel to become the person you ultimately want to be. This first step can start you on the way to reaching your goals. If you are unwilling to make this commitment, you are unlikely to reach your full potential.

Instead of talking up all of your trophies and accomplishments, ask other people about their notable achievements and proudest moments. This will help you to find some of the amazing things that people can accomplish, and help you to respect them more.

TIP! One interesting trait the might be worth developing is called ?sexual capital.? This doesn?t mean you need to use your sexuality as a means of getting the results you desire.

Stress is one of the biggest enemies of happiness. When our minds are stressed, our mental and physical bodies are harmed. In order to reach your goals, the stress in your mind must be destroyed. Take some time off regularly to relax and reflect. Having this time every day can make you more peaceful and happy with yourself.

The condition in which you keep your body can significantly impact your mental state. Exercise regularly and eat a nutritious diet. Keep in mind that a healthy body and mind go well together.

Knowing what you want out of life and how to get there are great tools for personal development. Use these goals as a way to measure your successes.

TIP! Though it is important to speak your mind, it is equally valuable to listen when others do so. This holds true in many areas of your life, including personal development.

No matter what you are aiming for in terms of personal development, you need to keep track of the progress you make. Take heed of the advice provided here so that you can determine how this should occur. Keep a diary that chronicles your self improvement exploits, and you will notice that you are changing in no time.

You may have already looked all over for Goal Setting information. It is fortunate that you found this informative article. You should now be well informed and prepared to tackle anything involving the subject. Read the tips above a few more times to really let it sink in, and keep this article by your side.

Rs 3800 crore land scam unearthed in Noida - Real Estate India

??|?? December 30, 2012 ?? 11:13am ??|Contributed by manoja

NOIDA: Another worth Rs 3800 crore during BSP regime has been unearthed in Noida. The previous government had leased back three lakh 81 thousand sq meter land in the favour of private companies and ?favourite? individuals. The authority has removed a Nayab Tehsildar and the authority CEO has recommended suspension of a PCS officer posted as additional district magistrate (land) in Noida. The authority is likely to lodge an FIR against these officers claim officials. The inquiry began in June, soon after the regime change in the state.

The Noida authority revealed that the scam took place in 2011 a inquiry revealed that three top Noida authority officials- a PCS officer Harish Chandar, who was posted as secretary, Ajay Shrivastav (Tahsildar), and Manoj Kumar Singh (Nayab Tahsildar) had allegedly allotted 3, 81, 527 square meters of developed prime land along Expressway, in sector- 140A, 141, 142 and 143 to three private companies, and individuals violating all laid down norms.

The Noida Authority removed Manoj Kumar Singh from his post while Ajay Shrivastava had been removed earlier. While, the Noida authority chief executive officer Sanjeev Saran on Thursday has recommended the suspension of PCS officer, Harish Chander, the current additional district magistrate in Gautam Budh Nagar district.

TOI has a copy of the letter written to UP chief secretary (appointment) Rajeev Kumar and has also accused the inquiry report conducted by the Authority into the multi crore scam. ??I have recommended Harish Chander?s suspension to UP chief secretary, because as being secretary of Noida authority in 2011, he was the main officer behind illegal allotment of this vast land,?" said the CEO in his letter.

The land was allotted at marginal rates of Rs 11,000 per square metre, even though the prevailing market rates were as much as Rs 1 lakh per square meter, said officials.

The land has been allotted to three private companies and a dozen ineligible individuals under the guise of regularising Abadi land dispute among farmers in Sehadra village along the Expressway in these sectors.
Officials explained that in the case of Abadi land regularisation, the Noida authority only has the power to leaseback a land to a villager if he was in possession of the same land, and it originally belongs to the same village. ? The involved officials blatantly violated these norms, these officials leased back, and got lease deeds done to ineligible people, and also to private companies, which otherwise cannot be done through legal means,?" said Vijay Kumar Yadav, deputy chief executive officer (DCEO), Noida authority.

The involved officers had told the UP government in 2011 that they need to allot the land to the villagers in order to maintain law and order in the region. ?They had used the farmer unrest of 2011 under the BSP reign to feign that violence will break out if this is not done,? said an official.

??But instead of leasing abadi land to farmers of Shahdra village in sector 140A, 141, 142, and 143, these three officers allotted vast tracks of land to private companies, and ineligible individuals, at a rate on which authority acquire land from farmers,?" said the official.

According to the inquiry, the accused officers had also managed to fool a high level committee headed by the DM and the SSP, that exclusively takes care of such Abadi land issues, by not revealing the specific area of the land allotted in the scam.

The Ultimate Japanese Convenience Food. Gyoza. | The ...

gyoza cookedWe love gyoza. Plump little Japanese dumplings filled with meat and vegetables. Their bottoms fried to a golden hue and tops softly steamed to silky perfection. They are available everywhere in Niseko. On and off piste. Always on the menu at the local izakaya to have with a drink and the ramen and noodle houses as an appetiser before the main course.

With three hungry teenagers in tow I paid a visit to the local Japanese supermarket in Kutchan town to stock up on supplies. I now have a refrigerator full of Japanese convenience food to satisfy the hungriest and greediest of them all. Gyoza, ramen, soba, pork or chicken buns, edamame and even tempura prawns are all available in handy convenience packs. With a minimum of fuss an authentic Japanese meal can be on the table in minutes.

Here?s how its done. Buy a packet of prepared gyoza from the Japanese supermarket. Any brand will do (it has to really as I neither speak Japanese or read kanji or hiragana). ?Be guided by the pictures.

gyoza packet

Heat a pan on medium with a little olive oil. Sear the bottoms of the gyoza until they are golden brown. Add 1/2 a cup of water and the contents of the seasoning sachets. Steam until the liquid has evaporated and serve.

So easy that even my teenagers can prepare these for themselves. With unrestricted access to the refrigerator they will probably eat a whole packet each.?The ski lifts here open at 8.30 am and operate until 9 pm at night. Often my little darlings ski home at around 5 pm. Raid the fridge and can be back out there under lights until the last run.

I myself prefer to pay a relaxing visit to the soothing mineral waters of the onsen and then visit one of the many izakaya and restaurants for a bite to eat. ?Tonight my husband and I are off to ABuCha for sukiyaki.?Whilst I adore these gyoza too, when I?m on holiday my children can fend for themselves. Fortunately these gyoza are also available in Japanese supermarkets back at home. So you?don?t?have to wait for a trip to Japan to enjoy them.

Jesco von Puttkamer, Von Braun Rocket Team Member, Dies at 79

Jesco von Puttkamer, a NASA engineer who helped launch the first astronauts to the moon, died Thursday (Dec. 27) at the age of 79 following a brief illness.

Von Puttkamer joined NASA in 1962 when Wernher von Braun invited him to join his rocket team based at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Von Braun and his team's work led to the development of the mighty Saturn V rocket ? the rocket responsible for landing the Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969.

"Jesco was an institution at NASA," said William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations at NASA headquarters in Washington D.C., in a statement. "His time here spanned almost the entire breadth of the agency's human spaceflight programs. He was a direct link from von Braun's efforts to get people off the ground to the International Space Station and 12 years of continuous human presence."

After ending his work at Marshall in 1974, von Puttkamer moved to NASA's headquarters in Washington D.C. to work with the International Space Station team documenting the lives of the residents aboard the ISS.

In addition to his contributions space science, von Puttkamer also made his mark on the world of science fiction. He served as the technical advisor for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979, and his novelette, "The Sleeping God," was included in an anthology of work based on the series. He also penned more than a dozen books on spaceflight.

Harness The Power Of Email To Market Your Business | Internet ...

Do you have an active marketing via email campaign that isn?t doing as well as you might have hoped? Are you interested in email marketing, but aren?t sure where you should start? You?ve found the right place. The following article will tell you what you need to know to put together a successful marketing via email campaign.

Ask permission before adding people to an email list. If you send emails without permission, your emails may be considered spam. Your reputation could be ruined and you may even get blacklisted and have your emails blocked by their ISP.

Have a strong title. Understand the subject title will be the very first line of text that your readers will view when they look at their inbox. Ensure that your title is clever and makes them want to click on your link. Just by doing this simple thing, your customer is almost guaranteed to keep reading to see what you have to say.

Email Address

This may seem like an obvious tip, but it?s important to be sure that every email address is correct on your mailing list. It would be a waste of time to have to find the correct email address and resend your emails. It?s a waste of time.

Make sure you focus on holidays when you are sending on communications for email promoting. Make sure you plan your emails with holidays in mind! Come up with marketing with email campaigns that are centered around important retail holidays like Valentine?s day, Easter, and Christmas. Try to market a little extra during slow sales periods.

Having a visible link where the person can unsubscribe is a bright idea. Make sure that this unsubscribe link is clearly visible and not hidden in text somewhere. Your customers must be made to feel that they are choosing to subscribe, and not that your emails are being forced upon them.

Spam Filters

Write for real people and forget about the spam bots. You want to avoid spam filters, and if you stick to your topic and talk to your customers directly then you should have no problem doing this. If you try too hard to avoid certain sales words like ?deals? or ?free,? the mailing will likely irritate the recipient and get nabbed by spam filters anyway.

Give people an easy sign up option to receive your marketing emails, and you will see the numbers on your list climb. Make the sign up option stand out on your site and you can easily add potential customers to your email list.

Strive to set a personal tone in every message you send as part of an marketing via email effort. Your customers will then have a personal image of your site rather than one that is negative or impersonal. You could have the CEO or president of your company sign their name at the bottom of the email to help your message make a better impression on your audience.

You should use all types of resources, and learn as much as you possibly can concerning email marketing. You can find books in libraries and on the web. Also, attend as many classes and workshops as you can find locally.

Keep your marketing copy on a personal, friendly level. As with other types of marketing, customers will be more likely to purchase items from you if you add a personal touch. As an example, if you are aware of the reason why a group of your subscribers joined your list, add that reason into your messaging.

Each email should only contain a single topic. With a deluge of information in your email, you can create an overwhelmed or bored reader, very easily. Develop one message, keep it reasonably short and to the point. Your customers will be happy that they?re not being bombarded with too much information.

India gang rape: why women are needed as justice officials

Mass protests in India after a vicious gang rape of a female student help put a spotlight on countries that need to have more women police and judges. Antirape laws are not enough.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / December 28, 2012

Indian police stand guard in front of a barricade as protesters march towards them during a Dec. 27 protest against a recent gang rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged to protect women while the young rape victim was flown to Singapore for treatment.

On paper, women today have far more legal protections than 50 years ago. More than half of the world?s countries have written gender equality into their constitutions. But the brutal rape of a female student in India has thrown a global spotlight on the need to put legal norms for women into practice.

For two weeks after the gang rape on Dec. 16, thousands of Indians have protested in New Delhi over the indifference of police and judges to the high number of incidents of rape. Legislators are now scrambling to pass antirape reforms. They have far to go.

India?s conviction rate in rape cases is no more than 26 percent. And that?s just for reported rapes. In a key measure of official insensitivity to violence against woman, only 7 percent of police officers are women. And a 1996 survey of judges in India found that 68 percent of them said provocative clothing is an invitation to rape.

One of the best ways to deter rape is to make it easier for women to report it, especially in a patriarchal and traditional society like India. Yet in a survey of 57 countries, only 1 in 10 women who say they experienced a sexual assault actually reported it.

Studies show that the reporting of sex crimes by women increases if female police officers are available to rape victims. The main reason is that it helps lessen the shame and stigma often felt by a female rape victim. And it allows for more comfort and consoling of the innocent.

Up and down the justice system more women are needed to deal with female-related crimes. Worldwide, only 9 percent of police and 27 percent of judges are women.

Many countries have become models of reform in how to deal with rape. Brazil set up women-only police stations in 1985, a practice now common in Latin America. Countries from Fiji to Pakistan provide special legal advice to women to help them through the courts. In parts of Africa, judges specializing in sex-crime cases travel to remote rural areas. In many countries, health workers are given special training in how to treat sexual-abuse victims.

According to a 2011 United Nations report on women, the justice system in most countries still needs to change its practices toward women. East Timor, for example, has only one doctor trained to collect evidence in rape cases.

?Although there is further to go, laws on violence against women are beginning to establish the kind of clear mandates and procedures that are needed to drive implementation and improve women?s access to justice,? stated the UN report.

The certainty of punishment for rape and the care that is given to rape victims will help curb rape. Equality for women means lifting their fears of rape through equality of treatment by law enforcement officials.

Marriott includes job training as part of social responsibility ...

As part of a social responsibility initiative, Marriott International is offering job- and life-skills training to young people with disabilities?and then helping them find jobs, often at Marriott hotels.

In 21 years, the hotelier?s Foun??da?tion for People with Disabilities has placed more than 13,500 youths in jobs with 3,500 employers, including Marriott, in nine U.S. cities. The effort is part of the foundation?s ?World of Opportunity? program, which addresses youth unemployment with training and job placement around the world.

Mari Snyder, VP of social responsibility, notes that the programs help prepare Marriott?s future employees, especially in other countries. She said two-thirds of the company?s 100,000 new hires over the next two years will come from outside the United States.

She added that sustainability requires both job creation and environmental stewardship. Marriott?s 2011-2012 Su?s??tain??abil??ity Report showcases the company?s environmental, economic and social responsibility efforts, including reduced water consumption at hotels, human rights training for Marriott associates around the world and a $2 million commitment to protect Brazilian rain forests.

Storm rakes half of nation; Arkansas still dark

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? As a the muted ends of a powerful winter storm that has killed more than a dozen people plodded through the Northeast, many in Arkansas were seeking warmth and shelter against the cold prospect of life without electricity into the new year.

A Christmas Day blizzard dumped more than 15 inches of snow on the state, causing massive damage to power lines that have affected more than 200,000 customers.

With the bleak word from the state's largest utility that the lights could be out until after the start of the new year, many residents who awoke snowbound Wednesday morning found themselves jamming the city's hotel rooms by Thursday night.

"I'm coping with hot toddies and peanuts," said Lynda Johnson, who lined up a series of hotel stays through hotels.com to make it at least through Saturday night. She has already been to the movies ? she saw "Django Unchained" ? and checked in with neighbors multiple times to see if the lights are back on.

They aren't.

Deena Brazell spent a night in her car for warmth, though she hadn't planned it that way.

"Everything in the apartment is electric. I stayed in the apartment the first night. After that, it got cold really quick," she said. "I went out to charge the phone and fell asleep, then I just decided to stay."

After the storm's peak early Wednesday, homes and businesses from border-to-border had lost power. Johnson, and several others, said they were hoping the power would be back on Wednesday after spending Christmas night in the dark. Butut then the president of the state's largest utility announced that some of the outages would persist at least into New Year's Day. Little Rock was among the cities hardest hit.

"We spent the first night at home and turned on the fireplace, but it doesn't give off a lot of heat," said Kathy Garner, who sought refuge at her sister and brother-in-law's house in Maumelle, a Little Rock suburb.

In a typical year, tornadoes bring Arkansas' worst weather, but the damage is isolated and linemen have a relatively easy time fixing the power grid.

This week's storm was epic by comparison, and despite the jokes ? "In Wisconsin, we call this Tuesday" ? as of Thursday night there was more snow on the ground in Little Rock than Milwaukee.

"You run out of money fast," Johnson said. "The things you had planned to do, you can't do. You need food, clothing and shelter. Since I'm not home, I have to find someplace for shelter. Then you have to find something to eat."

The storm system responsible for the misery roared out of the Rockies early Tuesday with blizzard conditions in southwestern Oklahoma and tornadoes along the Gulf Coast.

After sweeping across Arkansas, giving Little Rock its first white Christmas since 1926, it rolled into the Midwest and Northeast before moving on to Canada. Up to 20 inches of snow fell in the Adirondacks of New York; Indianapolis had 7.5 inches, its greatest snowfall in four years; and 4-6 inches fell in and around Concord, N.H.

"I'm going to be shoveling all day, just trying to keep up with the snow, which is impossible," said Dale Lamprey, clearing the sidewalk outside the legislative office building near the New Hampshire Statehouse.

Nationwide, at least 17 people died because of the ice, snow and wind. Deaths from wind-toppled trees also were reported in Texas and Louisiana, but car crashes caused most of the fatalities.

A Michigan woman who was riding in a car that struck a tree and two people riding in a car that slid across the center line of a road in Arkansas and hit another vehicle.

Two people were killed in Kentucky crashes, a New York man was killed after his pickup truck skidded on an icy road in northwest Pennsylvania, and an Ohio teenager died after losing control of her car and smashing into an oncoming snowplow.

Forty-two students traveling to London and Dublin were stuck in the Nashville, Tenn., airport thanks to poor weather in the Northeast. The frustrated students, from universities in Tennessee and Kentucky, were supposed to leave Wednesday and arrive in London on Thursday.

"It's a two-week program, so it's shortened already," said Joe Woolley, spokesman for the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad.

Farther east, the storm knocked out power to more than 7,000 homes and businesses in Maryland. In New Jersey, gusts of more than 70 mph were recorded along the coast, and the weather service issued a flood warning for some coastal areas. There were about 800 power outages in Vermont, but only a handful in neighboring New Hampshire.

Back in Arkansas, utility workers struggling in freezing temperatures restored power to nearly a third of their customers that lost power during the Christmas storm, but that still meant that more than 135,000 homes and businesses were in the dark as forecasters predicted another round of freezing rain for Friday.

"You just want to be home," Garner said at her sister's house. "You just want to be in your own bed. There's nothing like the comfort of your own home."

Stanford and Connecticut have developed one of the best rivalries in women's basketball over the past five years.

Whether facing off in the national championship game, playing in the Final Four, or just meeting in the regular season, the two programs on opposite sides of the country consistently have had compelling matchups.

The undefeated teams will renew their annual contest Saturday when the second-ranked Huskies (10-0) visit the No. 1 Cardinal (11-0).

"It's a rivalry for us, but more than that, it's a measuring stick," said Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, whose Cardinal have held the top spot in the poll for the past six weeks. "When the ball goes up, nobody cares anything about rankings."

The last time the teams met in the Bay Area in 2010, the Cardinal ended the Huskies' NCAA record 90-game winning streak. UConn will try and return the favor by snapping Stanford's streak of 82 straight home victories.

"It's going to be two really competitive teams, it's going to be a dogfight," UConn senior Kelly Faris said. "Two years ago that's what it was."

On the boards, Stanford's 6-foot-3 Chiney Ogwumike will battle with UConn's 6-5 Stefanie Dolson and 6-4 freshman Breanna Stewart. The younger sister of All-American Nneka Ogwumike, who graduated from Stanford, is averaging 21.8 points and 12.8 rebounds for the Cardinal.

Stewart is averaging a team-high 16.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, while Dolson is contributing 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

It marks the 51st meeting between the top two teams in the poll. The No. 1 seed holds a 31-19 lead. UConn and Stanford have been in three of those contests over the past few seasons with the Huskies winning all of them.

"The 1 versus 2 thing makes for better TV, but it doesn't change how we prepare," Stanford's Toni Kokenis said. "We are defending our home court, regardless of the opponent. But yeah, we ended their streak two years ago and I'm sure they want to do the same thing to us."

Stanford hasn't lost at Maples Pavilion since March 18, 2007, when Florida State beat the Cardinal in the second round of the NCAA tournament. UConn brought its streak to Stanford almost exactly two years ago only to see the Cardinal stop it with a 71-59 win in front of an enthusiastic crowd. VanDerveer expects a similar atmosphere Saturday.

"We're excited we're playing here," VanDerveer said. "Our team has played very well, but that's not the deciding factor. You have to make baskets and rebound and make stops. We know it's what you do on the court."

The Huskies, who beat Stanford in Hartford by 10 points last season, aren't concerned about ending the Cardinal's streak. They are just trying to improve.

"I don't think I'd go out there with the mindset that we have to break their streak," Faris said. "It's another game. But the whole streak thing, if you focus on that, you're not going to be doing the right thing."

Both coaches are aware that it's just one game in December with conference play about to start after the New Year.

"If you win on Saturday you know you beat a really good team," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "If you lose you know you got a lot of work to do to beat a really good team down the road."

Connecticut leads the series 7-6, including winning five of the last eight meetings ? dating back to 2005. Stanford, unlike a lot of other teams in the country, has been able to stay close to the Huskies in the losses, losing most by a dozen points or less.

"You have two of the best offensive teams in the country, not to say we're going to see who can win 110-109," he said. "We try to make scoring and scoring often our priority. Maybe that's why it's become such a great rivalry."

Unlike other rivalries in the sport that have ended during the past few years because of conference realignment or teams refusing to play each other, UConn and Stanford will continue for at least two more seasons. They will open next season in Connecticut.

"As long as Stanford wants to play we'll play them. I have a lot of respect for them, obviously, as a university and certainly their coaching staff," Auriemma said. "They're great people. And the kind of people they recruit are great people. So I'm thrilled that it was done. Really. I think that's a great thing for us."

After playing Stanford, UConn will head to Oregon before going home to open up its Big East schedule.

"Playing games on the road at the early part of the season is very important," Auriemma said. "Coming out here and playing Stanford and knowing how hard it is to play them, especially here. It's a great opportunity for us at this point in the season. As soon as we're done on this trip we have Notre Dame at home. Playing two teams in the top five in the country in a matter of a week or so is exactly what we need right about now."
