Samsung's Galaxy S3 put Apple's iPhone 4S sales to shame in the third quarter of 2012, according to a new report from market research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics.
The S3 reportedly sold 18 million units, while the 4S pushed just 16.2 million. Not a massive gap, sure, but a small victory for Samsung, which has been in and out of legal battles with its biggest smartphone rival all year.
On a global scale, the Galaxy S3 took 10.7 percent market share, compared to 9.7 percent for the iPhone 4S. On the other hand, when you put the 4S next to Apple's latest rendition ? the iPhone 5 ? you can tack on another 3.6 percent.
It's probably safe to say that 4S sales would have wiped out the S3 for Q3 2012 if the iPhone 5 hadn't launched in the same quarter. To be fair, it did launch near the very end of the quarter, but still sold a notable six million units (it could have sold even more than that, if it were actually up to snuff?with its stock at the time).
Still, there's no telling yet exactly what kind of results we'll see for Q4, though Strategy Analytics also noted in its release that it expects the iPhone 5 to go above and beyond shipments of the S3 during that time.
